Oslo-based artist and architect Per Carlsen constructs speculative landscapes where architecture becomes both subject and signal. Drawing from surrealism and the mass and severity of Brutalist form, his work stages monumental structures within expansive, often desolate terrains, frequently anchored by a solitary human figure.

These environments operate as visual thought experiments. Architecture appears oversized, isolated, and technologically assertive, set against fragile natural backdrops. The contrast is deliberate: scale, emptiness, and stillness are used to question narratives of progress, technological dependence, and environmental erosion.

Working across painting, illustration, and 3D modeling, Carlsen positions architecture as a symbolic device rather than a buildable object. His work sits at the intersection of art and architecture, inviting reflection on humanity’s evolving relationship with nature, infrastructure, and the futures being imagined.

Get • The slightly bonkers, slightly wonderful Shiroiya hotel designed by Sou Fujimoto. Describing itself as an immersive artwork, the hotel has art by well known artists scattered around the building and each of the unique rooms was designed by an artist, architect or designer. Fujimoto has totally gutted a preexisting hotel and created an Escher-esque and somewhat disorienting maze of stairs and bridges over four floors. The space is accented by a tube light sculpture by Leandro Erlich which interweaves through the main space of the hotel. (Between 9-midnight the light change colors.) The hotel also includes a blue bottle coffee, bakery, saunas, restaurant and a small stand up bar designed by Hiroshi Sugimoto.

This interior made me stop and stare. Beautiful béton brut with no hideous coating and excellent artworks throughout. Where is it? The City Hall of Offenbach am Main, a suburb of Frankfurt. Opened in 1971 and designed by the local studio Maier, Graf und Speidel.

Did you know that there is a Museum of Concrete? Spanish sculptor and architect Ángel Mateos built it in Doñinos de Salamanca. Ángel Mateos is considered the only sculptor who has developed his entire body of work in concrete. The building, which is itself a habitable sculpture, displays a collection of over 170 concrete works created by him between the 1970s and 1990s. The construction of the museum began in 1997 and ended in 1999. 420 cubic metres of concrete were used in its construction, and upon its inauguration in May 2002, it was named the Museum of Concrete. In 2018, the sculptor’s family established a Foundation to manage the Museum, and it reopened under its current name, the Ángel Mateos Museum.

Must-Visit Architectural Masterpieces in Jeju.

The 水·風·石 Museum on Jeju Island, designed by Itami Jun, is a masterpiece where Water, Wind, and Stone become the art. This contemplative outdoor space is a must-visit for design and architecture enthusiasts.
* Water (水): An elliptical pool reflecting the sky, allowing you to sense the passage of time.
* Wind (風): A wooden structure where you hear the breeze flowing through the planks.
* Stone (石): Features Jeju’s volcanic Basalt, highlighted by dramatic light casts.
The reservation-only museum guarantees a quiet, focused experience, offering a perfect, slower travel escape.
Extend your tour with nearby works: Podo Hotel, Podo Museum, and the Itami Jun Museum. Also, check out the architect‘s exhibition at FEZ Hannam in Seoul.
