Marsa Mina was envisioned as a waterfront development linked to Abu Dhabi’s flagship Port Khalifa, as a sojourn for repose meant for people on board the ships docking. The key intention of the design then becomes livening up the layover experience of the travelers to compel them to get down from the vessel. An engaging atmosphere was created by including vibrant colours, attractively framed views, and interactive seating & dining spaces. The clarity in segregation of vehicular and pedestrian pathways adds to the design in terms of its possibilities of interaction recruitment when people naturally pause on their now uninterrupted paths to exchange warm greetings or as little as cursory glances. This way, the design promotes a culture of bringing people out on to the streets and one of collaboration. Catering to not one key demographic but intended for a diverse range of users, the design incorporates facilities such as drive-through food outlets & kiosks with tastefully designed outdoor dining areas, play areas for children, prayer areas and entertainment spaces. The sea facing promenade and the lively lights emphasizing Marsa Mina’s nightscape in the city’s skyline further incentivize visits to the facility for city-dwellers who are simply looking for a place to relax. Marsa Mina was conceived not simply as a tangible space but also as an intangible experience, a whole brand in itself making a bold statement that sticks and etches itself into the mind’s eye.

PARALLEL GROUND is a subtle and indirect expression of the human tendency to gravitate towards the ground in our cultural context. The function of the design came about as spaces arranged along a journey downward, both visually and physically throughout the design, responding to the journey down the the sloping site terrain. Mezzanine levels were introduced based on need for accessibility, making maximum use of the conventional floor height, and simultaneously reducing effort in accessing the vertically zoned levels. The clearly split semi-private and private zones of the program unfold as a descent down the house, starting with the formal area at road level followed by the living core as a vertically divided volume, with an intersecting courtyard to connect the two zones. The division of the living core further based on deeper levels of privacy requirements within the family was a deliberate gesture to enable independence of seemingly co-dependent units.
This detailed vertical constitution of the structure gets hidden by the unpretentious horizontality of a facade that looms over the road, unfazed by the plethora of activities unraveling within.
