Guide to Reading a Crane Load Chart

A crane load chart is the most critical document for safe lifting operations. It defines how much a crane can lift under specific conditions — and exceeding it can lead to serious accidents. Here’s a simple guide to understanding it.

1 Identify the Crane Configuration
Before reading the chart, confirm:
Boom length
Jib (if installed)
Counterweight configuration
Outrigger setup (fully extended / partially extended / on tires)
The load chart is valid only for the exact configuration mentioned.

2 Understand the Key Terms
Rated Capacity
Maximum safe lifting load under specified conditions (includes hook block, slings, and lifting gear unless stated otherwise).
Boom Length
The length of the crane’s boom. Longer boom = lower lifting capacity.
Operating Radius
Distance from the center of crane rotation to the load.
As radius increases, capacity decreases.
Load Radius vs Boom Angle
Some charts are based on radius, others on boom angle. Always use the correct column.

3 Read the Chart Step-by-Step
Select the correct boom length row.
Move across to the operating radius column.
The intersection gives the maximum rated load.
Subtract hook block, rigging, and lifting accessories weight if required.
Example (conceptual):
Boom length: 30 m
Radius: 10 m
Chart shows: 12 tons
Hook block & rigging: 1 ton
Net allowable load = 11 tons

4 Check Critical Conditions
✔ Ground bearing capacity
✔ Wind speed limitations
✔ Outrigger mat requirement
✔ 360° vs over-side lifting capacity
✔ Pick & carry restrictions (if applicable)

5 Stability vs Structural Limits
Crane capacity is governed by:
Stability limits (tipping)
Structural limits (boom strength)
Some charts show whether the limit is stability-based or structural-based.

6 Important Safety Reminders
Never assume — always verify with the actual chart.
Use the manufacturer’s official load chart only.
Consider dynamic effects (swinging load, wind).
Follow site lift plan and method statement.
When in doubt, consult a qualified lifting engineer.
