Shop drawings play a crucial role in the construction process. While architectural drawings present the macro-level details, the shop drawings work out the finer, micro-level specifics. At Studio MH02, we specialize in creating shop drawings for various contractors across multiple projects. CONTROL JOINT DETAILS
For Education purposes only!

Ever noticed those thick strips running across the flooring at airports? They’re called control joints! You’ll find them in almost every large infrastructure project. But what exactly are they? Control joints help relieve stress caused by minor movements, like shrinkage during curing or small expansions and contractions from moisture in building elements.

In the BIM process, we start by creating the 2D drawing, followed by developing a family of the control joint. This family is then placed where needed, based on specific guidelines. Control joints can be added manually or through Python/Dynamo/Grasshopper scripts. When placement needs to be organic, it's best done manually.

Next time you’re at an airport or railway terminal, see if you can spot the control joints!

RADIAL PATTERN DETAILS

For projects with non-linear forms, we rely on something called a radial pattern.

Ever wondered how the shop drawings for such intricate floor patterns are created?
Granite stone flooring is usually cut at the quarry, with only minor adjustments made on-site. To ensure each stone is cut perfectly, we go through extensive dimensioning to define the exact size of every stone, making sure the cut list is accurate and ready for the quarry.

It’s a meticulous process, but definitely a fun and rewarding challenge, right?
