Metaspace Design

Metaspace Design A design firm based in Kochi, India - With Jacob George as our principal designer, we craft Architecture, Interiors, Products, and more. We are Metaspace.

We as an architectural design consultancy, strive to develop projects which bridge the gap between the built and natural environment. Our mantra is 'Towards Holism'. Where "Holism" seeks to address every element of building – from the multiple and immediate needs of our clients to the long term needs of humanity. And all of this has to be made possible with technologies and systems that are both e

fficient and flexible - those that reflect the fast changing world we live in. The health and well-being of both the people who inhabit our buildings and the environment our buildings inhabit, Biophilic design and environmental sustainability are the foundations on which our practice is built. We do not design our buildings to exhibit any particular "style". We do not advocate historical precedent, nor, at the other extreme – do we subscribe to short-lived design fads and the "isms" that seem to sprout in ever increasing numbers. We stay away from all the distracting noise that pervades the design space, instead opting for a simple and timeless elegance that is dictated by function, technology, human and environmental wellbeing and logic. Our practice also takes pride in ensuring that every detail down to the last bolt is “designed” as we believe that bold and exciting conceptual ideas without intelligent detailing is only half a solution. We believe that Form and Function are equal partners in our design solutions. Neither is less important, but form evolves from the functional exigencies of space, structure and detail rather than being an aesthetic priority that is an end in itself. The meaningful practice of Architecture in Metaspace is inherently infused with one overarching goal: to push the envelope. What drives and excites us is the continuous search for new solutions – not for the sake of being” different”, but because we believe that every new day is an opportunity for us to improve on what we had done the previous day, and that new problems and technologies call for new ideas rather than the regurgitation of decades old ways of doing business. And yes, we WANT to be excited everyday - because it is that excitement that fuels innovation.

Set on a compact 1.92-ground (approx. 10-cent) plot in the heart of Nungambakkam, this 9,000 sq.ft contemporary residence embodies biophilic design within a dense urban fabric. The client’s requirement for a 5 BHK home prompted a vertical layout across three levels, balancing functionality with openness and light. The result is a refined expression of tropical modernism—relaxed, sophisticated, and designed for seamless indoor–outdoor living.

Conceived to support rapid expansion, this 55,000 sq.ft open-plan workspace blends industrial grit with executive elegance, defined by a disciplined language of clean lines and precise architectural alignment. The underlying philosophy harmonizes the client's high-tech AI ethos with the organic warmth of wood and plants, creating a balanced environment that prioritizes the innate well-being of humans.

All furniture was custom-designed and fabricated to reflect a minimalist, streamlined aesthetic. A sense of lightness is reinforced through floating wooden grid ceilings, cantilevered executive desks, and wall panels elevated above the floor plane. Floors are a combination of functional carpet tiles and real wood planks in the executive areas. "Biophilia" is incorporated by a continuous line of indoor plants all around the periphery of the space, while geometric area rugs introduce subtle pops of color within the airy open-plan layout.

The design of this 55,000 sq.ft office space was conceived in response to the client’s rapid organizational growth and the need to accommodate a significant increase in staff while supporting evolving business operations. The resulting environment blends industrial grit with warm executive elegance, creating a contemporary open-plan workplace. Clean lines and precise alignment—across furniture, lighting, wall paneling, and architectural elements—establish a cohesive and disciplined design language throughout the floor.

The fundamental design philosophy was one of marrying the high-tech ethos of a cutting edge IT/AI company with the warmth and grace of wood and plants, which human beings are programmed to genetically respond positively to.

Upon entry, visitors are greeted by a minimalist reception desk set against a dynamic video wall, and a cascading water curtain creating the backdrop to the reception area, which together create an exciting visual experience while offering a subtle layer of visual privacy to the secured office zones beyond. A clear circulation path wraps around the central core, defined by a ‘starlight’ ceiling and a wood edged carpet of a different finish, both of which enhances way finding, and naturally guides movement along the main corridor.

Cliff House... This house is for a young family that had a clear vision of what they wanted. And they wanted the unusual.

An amazing site that sits atop a 40 ft. high cliff that overlooks a vast valley of trees....the site and the view had to be leveraged to its fullest. They wanted a house where all the important living spaces were on the first floor and where the first floor was cantilevered and floating above the ground.

We came up with a very open "porous" design where the living spaces have open views to both sides. They are both nature lovers and we were therefore allowed to bring in lots of plants and water pools on all levels, both inside and outside the house. As we are committed to solar energy, we managed to use a large quantities of solar panels.....which became an important and integral part of the design aesthetic. We have interwoven the clean lines and large glass openings with a profusion of wood -- both in the floors and within the structures of the skylights and vertical fins that help define the various sections of the home, and with large door and wall panels such that the predominant feel is that warm interplay of wood, water and plants. This house is a great example of biophilic design.

“There is geometry in the humming of strings, there is frozen music in architecture.”
The play of geometry with minimalism as the underlying ethos leads you to a home with the big door. Open the door and you dissolve into the spaces. Overtaken by the colossal magnitude of each room you almost enjoy blending into it. Likewise, the house itself effortlessly melds into its surroundings, submitting to the cosmic world, while retaining its identity.

“Architecture should speak of its time and place but yearn for timelessness.”
Creating a unique home from the same local materials that Kerala has been using for decades, in a completely different style of architecture than that which the context is familiar with, is always an uphill battle for an architect. This home ticks those boxes in more ways than one for the 22-year-old student architect. Moreover, the distinctive wear on each brick over the years paints a poetic scenery. The home speaks volumes through its volumes, reaching for the sky, rooted to the ground.

Time is the ultimate critic.

A home is created not only when a house is humanized but also when the structures' interplay with weather and context becomes a graceful part of its existence. This 43 year old home was designed by 22 year old Ar. Jacob George has stood the test of time elegantly and continues to be relevant in this world of shifting trends.
The central courtyard, the soul of Indian homes, has been transformed with a touch of modernism. The weathered bricks referencing the past, witness to numerous life experiences, have always been showered with light from above. Contextual minimalism and experimentation from the architect have led to volumes unlike any. Light and leaves breathe life into these spaces while the materiality brings them closer to the ground.
