Snake Plant also commonly known as Mother In-laws Tongue belongs to the Sansevieria or Lily family and is counted amongst succulent species.

Its botanical name is Sansevieria trifasciata

This wonderful and hardy plant has made its place amongst the most preferred indoor plants due to low maintenance and tremendous health benefits.

Advantages of Snake or Sansaveria Plant

👉Best Natural Air-Purifier
Better ability to purify air than most other indoor plants makes Snake Plant an excellent choice for gardeners as well as health-conscious people.

It absorbs excessive amounts of carbon monoxide and emits oxygen 24*7 and filters other toxins from the air such as benzene, xylene, trichloroethylene, and formaldehyde.

👉Drought Resistance Plant

Belonging to the succulent family, Snake Plant can thrive without water in extreme climatic conditions, including summers. In winters these plants stay healthy when watered once in a month and more watering results in damaging or permanently killing this plant.

👉Counters External as well as Indoor Air Pollution.

A recent study claims that indoor air pollution can be as deadlier as outdoor air pollution.

There are many ways to reduce indoor as well as outdoor air pollution and the best way is to plant Snake plants both indoors and outdoors as they can thrive well in both the conditions and can tolerate direct sunlight which very few other indoor plants are capable of doing.

👉Abundant Oxygen Supplier

A theoretical report published at Harvard University showed that a snake plants or Sansevieria is one of the most oxygen giving houseplants and its health benefits for humans cannot be denied.

Snake plant efficiently absorbs toxins and releases oxygen in the environment. The plant may releases moisture in the air and reduces the risk of airborne allergies effectively.

👉Looks Great

Apart from being one of the best air purifying indoor and houseplant, it also scores upon its ornamental looks which are very unique and eye-catching. The straight-curvy thick and tall foliage without stems with the shades of green, yellow or gray in its foliage makes it a beautiful, interesting and desiring indoor plant.

👉Anti-cancer Plant

Like I mentioned earlier the Snake Plants capability of absorbing and getting the surroundings rid of toxic air pollutants and cancer-causing agents like benzene, formaldehyde, xylene, and toluene makes it an effective choice to treat and prevent this deadly disease.

👉Approved by NASA

The well-known NASA experiment performed in the year 1989 on indoor plants proved that plants with more leaf surface area act as better natural air purifiers and the Snake Plant is one of them.

This plant is also a part of space equipment for the very same reason.

👉CO2 Night Absorber

Snake plant indeed reduces the CO2 even in the night. It is due to the Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM), the capability to perform a particular type of photosynthesis that drought tolerant, dry climate and succulents plants usually perform. They open their stomata in evening hours to minimize water loss in hot climatic conditions.

👉Less Fertilizer Dependent Plants

Snake Plants have made its place amongst the most low maintenance species in the plant kingdom. It can tolerate full sun, full shade, and lack of water and fertilizes.

In short, it thrives even if neglected for weeks or months and if required you can add organic fertilizers once a month.

It requires fertilization rarely and the best fertilizer for snake plants that I have used and recommend are cow urine, tea compost, compost and cow dung manure or any other organic fertilizer you use for succulent plants.

Vastu and Feng Shui friendly
With all the other Snake Plant Benefits listed above ‘mother-in-law plant’ is also deemed a good luck plant because of its ability to absorb toxins, poisonous gases from the air and keep us healthy.
