Ahanas Design 4 Space And like the Sun fills every new day with hopes and promises, we design spaces which will radiate the hopes and promises of our clients.

Head by our chief designer Mr Rahin Pavithran, we have been designing spaces since 1999. Originality and innovation has been two of our core values and we’ve stuck true to them by working closely with our clients to arrive at their story.

There are times when a landscape speaks so loudly, the architecture simply has to listen.

Our vision for this resort in Vypin was born directly from the waters it was meant to inhabit. The site was a traditional Chemeen kettu, a sprawling six-acre prawn farm that offered a mere fifty cents of solid earth. The land itself gave us our brief. We had to float.

Rather than imposing heavy, foreign structures onto this delicate aquatic ecosystem, we looked to the local maritime vernacular for answers. The design was an exercise in pure adaptive reuse. We envisioned giving a second life to the forgotten. Decommissioned boats sourced from Beypore were to be beautifully refurbished into private, floating cottages. Upcycled shipping containers would serve as the culinary heart of the property. Every detail, right down to a naturally self-contained sewage disposal system, was planned to respect the rhythm of the tides.

In the end, regulatory complexities kept this project from breaking ground. The resort was never built. But unbuilt architecture teaches us a vital lesson. There are moments in this studio when we do not calculate the red tape or question if a project will actually see the light of day. We simply study the environment and let the terrain inspire us.

The waters of Vypin gave us a beautiful dream to draft. This iteration remains a proud expression of the joy of the creative process and the art of designing purely for the soul of the land.

There is a quiet profoundness when a studio travels to a new landscape together. This project marked our team’s very first visit to Tirunelveli. We were standing in our client’s hometown, a place they visit only once in a while. Their vision was to construct a farmhouse here, and because these return trips are rare, the brief carried a beautiful emotional weight. They wanted to instantly feel the comforting warmth the moment they arrived, yet they needed a thoroughly modern approach for seamless functionality.

To understand the design, one must understand the setting. In our perception Tirunelveli possesses one of the most unique architectural languages in India today, showcasing a rare collision of Art Nouveau and Chettinad architecture. Generally these residential areas of Tirunelveli are so tightly packed, the compound wall is usually treated as a rigid boundary, but acting as an important design feature. We decided to rethink this facade element as the focal point for the entire home spanning around 15,000 sq feet. We gave its compound wall an art nouveau inspiration. The structure above and inside of the home was an interpretation of chettinad architecture in a modern way.

Inside this protective envelope, the architecture is designed to breathe. The ground floor dissolves into open, intervening volumes. Traditional courtyards, known as muttrams, are connected by continuous open pockets of light and air.

This was the inaugural concept we pitched. As the project evolved, we took a different traditional path for the final build, carefully preserving the soul of this initial vision. The completed home now stands beautifully in town of Ariyanayagipuram. Yet this early iteration holds the raw magic of our first team trip, resting in our archives as a celebration of the creative process.

The Unbuilt Spaces by Ahanas Design For Space.

In architecture and interior design, the success of a project is often decided long before site ex*****on begins.

If you walk into a stationery store in Japan, you will find entire walls dedicated to planners, notebooks, and scheduling tools. That culture of planning reflects a deeper mindset: precision creates freedom. The more rigorously the work is resolved upfront, the smoother and more confident the ex*****on becomes.

At Ahanas, that thinking is deeply embedded in our process.

Before any site work begins, we spend significant time in the planning stage, what the Japanese call keikaku. This is where ideas are tested, details are coordinated, and the project is translated from concept into a buildable reality.

Why is this stage so important?

Design coordination: Every element is studied in relation to the whole, from spatial flow and proportions to material junctions, lighting positions, furniture layouts, and electrical points.

Risk reduction during ex*****on. The more decisions resolved on paper, the fewer ambiguities remain on site. This reduces errors, avoids rework, and helps protect both timeline and quality.

Clarity for construction: Sketches, renderings, and detailed drawings are not just presentation tools. They are instruments for communication, helping clients, consultants, and contractors align around one clear vision.

Confidence for the client: A well-planned project creates peace of mind. It allows the client to step back, knowing the design has been thought through with care and technical discipline.

For us, design is not only about the final visual outcome. It is also about the rigour behind every line drawn before ex*****on begins.

A hand sketch may look intuitive and expressive, but behind it sits a process of observation, planning, and technical intent.

Do you see planning as a creative constraint, or as the foundation of great design?
