Perched on a mountain top in Nedumkandam, Idukki, Kerala, this farmhouse and residence was conceived for a family with a long association with life abroad, yet a strong emotional connection to the landscape, local community, and farming traditions.
The design responds directly to the site’s dramatic contours and expansive valley views, while acknowledging the intense climatic conditions of rain and wind typical of the hill region.
The architectural response is shaped by the elements. The pitched roof, large openings, and extended verandahs frame the surrounding green draped valley and invite constant visual and spatial contact with the landscape. The house is organized across three levels, carefully adapted to the steep topography to minimize disruption to the natural terrain.
The interior is designed to remain warm and intimate, with the client’s personal collections and travel-inspired decor adding a layered, lived-in character. The paintings, soft furnishings, art pieces, and other curated elements were selected in close collaboration with the client, enriching the interiors with warmth, personality, and a refined sense of character. The project reflects a balance of context, climate, and memory, resulting in a home that is both grounded in place and open to the horizon.
A house shaped by nature, memory, and belonging. "𝕯𝖗𝖊𝖆𝖒𝖘"
