Light was considered as part of the design, not something that comes in later. The openings, surfaces and volumes were planned to respond to how light changes through the day. Over time, this changes how the space feels and is used, without adding anything extra.

This window was designed to do more than open and close - it controls how light enters, how views are framed and how the inside connects with what’s outside. The movement is intentional - it allows the space to shift depending on how it is used. Small elements like this end up playing a larger role in how the space is experienced.

Before the architecture settles into the landscape, there is a lot of careful work that goes into understanding and shaping it.

At Vaasta, the process involved working closely with the site - responding to its levels, its materials, and its conditions. What you see today is not just the final form, but the result of many small, considered decisions made along the way. The process is rarely visible, but it stays within the work.

The materials at Vaasta

Stone gathered from the land, timber that ages with time, surfaces that respond to light, water and weather - each element was selected to sit comfortably within its surroundings - sometimes even noticing what isn’t immediately visible.

When materials find harmony, the architecture feels more settled, and more natural over time.

Vaasta Vagamon resort:

This boutique resort of 20 rooms, located into a serene valley, has sequential spaces strung along a path.

It’s slowly revealing architecture is made with site specific elements such as silhouetted trees against moving mist, walls from gathered stone, and subtle articulation of ground. One arrives in the garden of mist’, the arrival court, before descending into the lounge, and further the rooms that are placed deep in the valley.

Kerala architecture has a strong aesthetic identity, but it’s easy to reduce it to merely visual elements. For the renovation of the Sreelekha Residence, the focus was on understanding what makes it authentic - the proportions, the climate response, the relationship between inside and outside.
The intention was to retain that character while adapting it to how the house is used today. Authenticity, for us, comes from equating aesthetics with truth and beauty.

This was a renovation, and the canvas was open.
We could have done anything — but the real question was what not to do.

Instead of changing everything, we tried to understand what would make this house truly feel like home for the person living here.

What kind of spaces would feel natural to them?
How would they move through it?
Where would they pause to watch the rain?

The design came from those answers.

Sometimes, doing less allows a space to feel more personal.

Every home reflects the person living in it.

For the Sreelekha Residence, it was about understanding how the person wanted to live - what kind of light they preferred, how they moved through spaces, where they felt most comfortable, and whether they would feel safe in ‘their’ space.

The design philosophy answered these questions. In the end, the house is a response to a way of living.

Our studio space is a working environment that feels open, calm, and adaptable — much like the spaces we design for our projects. It is a space where thoughtful work is both created and showcased, all through the messiness and rigor of the process.

Models cut.
Sketches drawn over.
Conversations that sift for refinement.

This, tempered by the light and the wind, creates an atmosphere we adore.

It is our sanctuary.

Country roads, take me home…

Like long drives along winding roads, building in the hills is never straightforward.
It demands patience —
And yet, there is a quiet joy in watching a structure slowly emerge — not as an imposition, but as something that takes shape meaningfully.
On such sites, responses become decisions.

An unexpected patch of loose soil transforms into a stepped well.
A protected tree at the centre reshapes the lobby — and the lobby becomes a verandah.

On steep slopes, sometimes even pouring concrete needs a little more than just design or technology - it’s jugaad!
Constraints turn into character — and somewhere between the drive & the sweat, the building begins to belong. 🌿

Stone House, Munnar, Kerala (Avadale Munnar)

The project had to be sited into a clearing, already made in a sloping site. We felt it was right to build a profile that echoes the lie of the land, rather than making it obviously present.
