Boophone disticha (Bushman Poison Plant )

This is a bulbous plant native of South Africa
They are commonly called century plant or tumble w**d. The extract from this plant is used by the native Sam tribe for making poison arrows. The bulb is also used in the African traditional medicine. I love the beautiful leaves of this plant of mine. In nature they get beautiful flower in spring. But my plant is young , so I have to wait for couple of years for it to bloom. They love to be in full sun with some intermittent watering.
I like to share a youtube video link very informative about this plant from South Africa, the link belongs to Eco Training TV, Flora Friday

MONADENIUM SCHUBEI TANZANIA RED

This belongs to the euphorbia sp. I loved the red colour of this very rare succulent and ordered it online to Century plant nursery in Bangalore. It got delivered within a week. The plant I got was small and bare rooted. there were no leaves but the colour was red. My first job was to put it inside a pot. I made my own potting soil mixed with coarse sand , small lava rocks , perlite, pumice stone and a small quantity of vermicompost and bone meal. I didn't water it for 5 days. The plant is now more than 4 months old it has increased in size. I keep it outside in the full sun. New leaves have started appearing from the top. if you keep it under the full sun the red colour remains. It turns green only when it gets less sunlight. Unlike other cacti, it requires watering twice a week. the temperature at my place is nearing 40 deg centigrade.

These plants are found in East Africa , Tanzania, .In their natural habitat, they grow like shrubs.

Commophora kataf Turkanensis

COMMIPHORA KATAF SUBSP. TURKANENSIS

This is a very interesting plant found in the Eastern part of Africa. In natural habitat, it can grow up to 5 meters in height.

I love this plant because of the unique skin of the bark. The bark is white papery and comes out at places. the leaves are pointed downwards. its a deciduous plant. So when I first got the plant in winter there were no leaves. only the stems. From Nov to March it was dormant. the first sign of leaves I noticed in the mid-March. I was over joyed to feel the first sign of life in the plant.

PHYLANTHUS MIRABILIS

This is a beautiful caudiciform from Thailand. this plant is present in the higher altitude of Thailand where the ground is rocky and covered with mosses. I have potted it into a well draining soil formed of vermicompost (50%) , pumice and coarse sand. Its summer in my place temperature goes high to 40 deg C. So I need to water it every fourth day once the soil dries up. The plant is kept in partial sun . The most beautiful part of this plant are the leaves. They are yellow brown in color. During night time they close just like the butterfly wings. During daylight it opens up. But if the plant is kept under harsh sun it again spontaneously closes. This plant has a beautiful caudex.

DORSTENIA FOETIDA - A RARE SUCCULENT FROM CENTRAL AFRICA
I shall be discussing today an uncommon rare succulent from Central Africa. It's a small succulent with a caudex, the stem is wide. It is a stem succulent that may be single or branched. the branching happens at the base. My plant at present has a single branching from the base. This plant loves bright light but not direct sun, so I have kept it near a window where it gets some morning sun and indirect light throughout the day. As this plant belongs to the central part of Africa, where the climate is not so dry, more tropical, this plant loves moisture in the weather. I potted it in a small earthen pot with a humus mixed soil containing vermicompost, coarse sand, and pumice stone. I need to water it every 2 days so that the delicate roots don't become too dry. The leaves that come out from the apex, are green to brown in colour. The most interesting part is the flowers, also called shield flowers. They have small shield shaped inflorescences, and tiny flowers come out around the inflorescence, which is also known as hypanthodium. In nature they are 30 cm tall with a caudex of about 15 cm.

ADENSONIA DIGITATA( BAOBAB AFRICAN)

I have been always thrilled whenever I have come across baobab during my journey in Africa. The trees are gigantic and are more than 500 years old. During dry seasons they are without leaves, the huge trunk is the source of water for the elephants. During the rainy season, the leaves appear and also soon is the flowering season. the fruits or the baobab pods are nutritious and are eaten as food by man and animals. The maximum age a baobab tree can live is 1500 years

I have always thought of getting a Baobab tree in my place in Kolkata, India. Ultimately I could fulfil my dream. Purchased a small baobab tree from the Century plant Nursery in Bangalore. When I received the plant it was just coming out of the winter dormancy. The plant was sent bare-rooted. My first job was to put it inside a pot with appropriate soil. From my experience of travelling in Africa, I decided to make the soil with vermicompost 30 per cent, coarse sand 30 per cent, perlite 20 per cent and pumice stone 20 per cent. 3 tsp of the bone meal was added also.

Within 1 week more leaves started coming. As it has woken up from the winter dormancy, and leaves have started coming out, I decided to water it twice in the week. I kept it in full sun. Very recently there was rain in the evening, I allowed the plant to get drenched in rainwater. And after that, I found more leaves are coming out.
