Being – Existing/ what is
In its many uses like - being me, to the collective Human being to Super Being, the sense of being can vary in Scale – like zooming in and out on a monitor.
Context is that which sets the scale of Being, a set of facts that surround the situation.
We often confirm to a physical connotation on one hand, such as long/short, up/down, in/out, and to a less tangible connotation like history, culture, relationship, emotions.
The context is again set within a time /space frame within which we have the dynamics of day, night, and seasons.
As people we have the power to work within this time / space frame, which is within the context frame which is within the state of being. We thus telescope from the smaller part to the bigger whole. What we do within our time / space affects the larger state of being and vice versa.
That is Experience- all that is perceived, understood and remembered.
Experience at the level of being
Experience the Context.
Experience the space and time matrix.
As Architects we have given ourselves a role to create a microcosm of our surroundings. The more we are in tune with the dynamics of nature, the more appropriate our design. Each of us wants to do it responsibly. We owe that….

Aavani, the home of Mrs. and Mr. Dominic Sebastian Karipaparambil, is one of the first projects of dhrumam architects. It is home to an extended family and friends. As an architect it gives immense pleasure that it is the happy meeting place it was always meant to be.

SKYFALL, Residence of Suraj and Aley is perched on a hillside overlooking tea plantations,Forests and the valley offering a view of Mettupalayam town in the plains. The house opens out to nature on one side while being closed from the public on the approach side, with only the welcoming porch.
Suraj, Aley, their two children and two dogs have an open run of the multi level house, while the chicken, duck and rabbits inhabit the compound. Beyond the compound are regular visits from bison and Porcupine with the occasional bear or leopard.
The house tries to snuggle into the landscape while making most of the richness nature offers.

JAK HOME
Sustainable: causing little or no damage to the environment and therefore able to continue
for a long time.
: to maintain at a certain level.

Architecture of buildings require that we do use a certain amount of material and space.
The only path that is often left is to take the least from nature and use most of what nature provides.
We need to twist and turn through the maze of requirements, costs, availability, acceptability, work expertise to finally establish the structure.

The JAK house tries to receive from nature what is provided in abundance for free.
The JAK house celebrates Earth through the plants and stones and monsoon springs.
The Rains are enjoyed and used and hardly avoided.
The Sun and Moon are always in and around creating special moments, every time.
The Breeze is welcome and Jacob is in happy harmony.

The linear plan runs with the site contours. This minimised the cutting and the same was used to fill an extant pit. Therefore the cut soil was used at site. The North side was opened to bring in even light and get a view. The south was closed to prevent direct sun from the south slant and to shield from the neighbours.

The North side roof was sloped to face south at 15* to provide for solar panels.
The main roofs drain into a gutter that roofs the passage. This gutter is made wide to prevent clogging by leaves and twigs from the surrounding trees and spout drained off the building in a cascade that ebbs and tides with the quantum of rain. A visual delight.
The front door opens wide to a long passage with the lounge/dining area on the North and a narrow dry court on the south. This expands the space while still maintaining privacy.
The court functions to prevent the heat of the south wall conducting into the room. The narrow court has a pergola above that ventilates the hot air from this buffer zone. This sets up a draw of air through the house. There is always a play of light in the house.
Moonlit nights are surreal.

As with the room on the North West which is at once an office room from where most of the plantation work can be observed, a reading and TV nook, an extra Bedroom, most of the spaces are multiuse, but the toilets and kitchen.
The JAK home takes lessons from tradition and reinterprets it in form but not in spirit.
The JAK home is about respect for Context and Nature.
This is the platform of Sustainability.

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Wonderful year ahead.

TIME:
How would you count time
In hours, minutes, seconds
As seen on the clock face ?
In ages, eons, millenniums
Or distance in space ?

As good times and bad
Number of laughs you had
Number of times you cried
In success, failures or tried ?

Living life to the best
Being useful to the rest.
Cause time would pass anyway
In time- you’d pass away.

How would time count you?
