Project Alif Masjid
Alif Masjid is a visionary mosque renovation designed to accommodate nearly 550 worshippers, located at Kakkanchery along the Calicut–Malappuram border in India. Conceived as India’s first futuristic mosque, the project reimagines an existing sacred structure through a forward-looking architectural lens—where spirituality, light, and form work as one.
The core design idea is derived from “Alif,” the first letter of the Arabic language and a powerful symbol of unity, origin, and divine presence. This concept becomes the generative force behind both the interior spatial experience and the exterior façade. Interpreted through a futuristic architectural language rooted in Islamic principles, the Alif form establishes a deep spiritual connection between the worshipper and the space.
The east–west movement of the sun plays a central role in shaping the mosque. The Alif-inspired façade is carefully oriented to receive daylight from sunrise to sunset, allowing natural light to continuously transform the building throughout the day. This evolving light creates a serene yet dynamic spiritual environment, enriching both the prayer halls and the outer skin of the mosque.
Landscape design is seamlessly integrated into the architecture, softening edges and dissolving the boundary between inside and outside. This gradual transition enhances comfort, contemplation, and a sense of calm. Across the five daily prayers, the mosque functions not just as a place of worship, but as a space for renewal—revitalising the body, mind, and inner soul through light, form, and silence.
A futuristic reinterpretation of sacred space—where faith, geometry, and daylight come together to shape a spiritually immersive experience.
