Posted β’ Set on the quiet outskirts of the city, is a family home in Coimbatore designed around a central courtyard, capturing a familyβs deep-rooted vernacular sensibilities and simple lifestyle. The dual priorities of Vastu and Security shape the design of the 4,000-square-foot single-storey house designed by Mumbai-based practice. A.Y.S.A India(), assisted by , resulting in an introverted architecture that remains understated and discreet on the outside, yet opens up into a warm, inviting space once inside.
Stepping into the foyer through the traditional solid wood door from the verandah, an internal corner window reveals a light-filled courtyard beyond. Oriented along the N-S direction, the east volume houses common areas: living, dining, and kitchen, while the bedrooms are tucked into the west wing for privacy. As you step into the living space, a high, asymmetrical Mangalore-tiled ceiling draws your eye upward. Designed to combat the unpredictable monsoons in the region, the roof slopes from 8 feet at the northeast corner to 17 feet at its highest point drawing attention towards the courtyard. Clerestory glass, covered in a translucent film, filters soft light into the space. A free-standing focal rammed earth wall partitions the living room from the dining room, which flows into an open kitchen with a central island and a built-in breakfast counter.
