She named it while nurturing from caterpillar🥹 constantly fed it, kept its area clean of p**p and then felt sad when released it open worry I about the future.

This Common mormon butterfly and my girl's uncommon childhood..!
She was 3yr old when she first saw a Caterpillar 🐛 and she was never scared of any caterpillar 🐛 or rearing it to a butterfly 🦋. Then no looking back she was my companion in the butterfly rearing journey.
Now she is a fully grown teenager but the excitement for butterflies is the same.
She had a science class chapter on 🦋 but she didn't announce her school that she lives this lifecycle of butterflies everyday. One day when the teacher specifically asked her, she explained how she lived the whole experience of a butterfly lifecycle since childhood.
This Common mormon butterfly 🦋 which is very common in India flies to our apartment to kay egs and we do its life regularly.

We protest for temples, we stay silent for such trees
Why the Nagalingam / Cannonball Tree- Couroupita guianensis matters.
It’s not "just a pretty tree". It’s ecological, cultural, and climate infrastructure.

The 'Keystone' tree

For biodiversity:
Bat + Bee magnet: Flowers open at night with a strong scent. Pollinated by bats + carpenter bees – both are declining pollinators. No bats = no Nagalingam = less mango pollination nearby.

Bird + Squirrel canteen- Cannonball fruits weigh 2-3kg. When they fall + crack, pulp feeds squirrels, monkeys, birds. One tree = food court for urban wildlife.
Host tree- Supports 15+ species of epiphytes, orchids, ferns on its bark. Old trees = micro-habitats.

For climate:
-Natural AC the canopy = 10-12°C cooler underneath. One mature tree = cooling power of 10 room ACs running 20 hrs/day. Critical for Mumbai heat islands.
Carbon sink- 200-yr old tree stores ∼ 22 tons CO2. New saplings take 40 years to match that.
Air purifier- Large leaves trap PM2.5 + dust. Mumbai needs this more than statues.
Cultural + Religious Importance – "Shiva’s Tree

Shivalinga shape-: Flower has central lingam + hooded snake structure. Known as Nagalingam in South, Kailaspati in North. Offered to Shiva, especially in monsoon.

Temple tree- Planted in 90% of old Shiva temples across India. Ayodhya, Kashi, Rameshwaram – all have them. Cutting it = desecrating the temple ecosystem.
Ayurveda- Bark, leaves, flowers used for cold, skin diseases, anti-microbial. Fruit pulp = antiseptic.
Not for self-medication_ – but biodiversity loss = medicine loss.

Urban Importance – Why India needs it.
Storm survivor- Buttress roots + low center of gravity. Rarely falls in cyclones.

Low maintenance👇Native-adjacent, pest-resistant, no watering needed after 5 years. BMC spends lakhs on exotic trees that die. This one thrives.

Space efficient- Canopy is high + narrow. Doesn’t block signals/balconies like rain trees. Perfect for roadsides.

The Threat – Why it’s disappearing
"No commercial value" Timber isn’t useful, so the forest dept doesn’t replant.

Our grandfather prayed to this flower and our kid will see it only in textbooks

Can you believe your eyes are looking at a butterfly not common to crowded urban settings.
Meet this Uncommon butterfly, Suffused double banded Judy 🦋-Abisara bifasciata suffusa.

One can rarely see this butterfly in urban areas, even if u do see the sightings are fairly uncommon.

This butterfly is a "forest dweller" by nature, but it occasionally appears in urban green spaces that mimic its natural habitat.

And this proves that if we create a forest-like garden then we can invite even uncommon butterflies.

They said butterflies don’t come to high-rises. But in my apartment butterflies come because they have not much choice. We stole their forests.
Because of metro 🚇 work huge amount of unnecessary trees got cut in my area.
She shouldn’t have to work this hard. And if you think it's offensive then argue with the butterfly, not me.
And look She adapted, can we?

So plz Plant some butterfly flowers because even your balcony is enough to give recluse to butterflies 🦋.

I saw this 🦋 - Common cerulean nectaring on Trifolium pratense- Pink 🍀 in Bali Rice fields.

This plant invites many lycenidea butterflies for nectar Also it is a host plant for several species of butterflies and moths, largely within the Fabaceae-feeding groups.
It is particularly recognized as a host for the Clouded Sulphur, Grey Hairstreak butterfly in America and Common Blue in India.
But did you know that it is also a
medicinal plant used by humans.

It is a legume rich in isoflavones phytoestrogens- used primarily to manage symptoms, such as hot flashes and night sweats, while supporting bone health.
It is also used in herbal medicine for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, particularly for skin conditions and respiratory health.
Detailed on 🍀Health Benefits👇
Menopausal Symptoms: Often used to reduce the frequency of hot flashes and night sweats by 30–50% due to its estrogen-like compounds.
Bone Health: Studies indicate it may help prevent menopause-related osteoporosis, as isoflavones can aid in decreasing bone turnover.
Cardiovascular Support: It may improve arterial health and help maintain healthy cholesterol levels (HDL).
Skin Health: Traditionally applied to treat eczema and psoriasis, likely due to its anti-inflammatory, detoxifying properties.
Respiratory Aid: Traditionally used as a tincture to treat coughs and bronchitis.

The love 💚n relationships in 🦋

Butterfly courtship and mating involve complex, species-specific rituals.
It starts with males "patrolling" or "perching" to locate females via sight and scent.
Males court females with aerial dances, hovering, and by releasing pheromones from specialized scales or hair pencils to signal willingness.
Males use bright wing colors to identify mates and release pheromones to attract them.

Males perform a "dance" that involves fluttering, hovering, or hovering over the female to convince her to mate.
Females, which are often more interested in finding a suitable plant for their eggs, may reject suitors by flying away, soaring upwards, or lifting their abdomens, according to insights from many researches.

What if I tell you that this a butterfly 🦋 Caterpillar.
This Hesperiidae (skipper butterfly) caterpillar was feeding on rice leaf, by hiding inside the leaf. I saw it in Bali rice fields.. But I also spotted a tiny wasp circling it.

Hesperidae butterfly Caterpillars are frequently targeted by parasitic wasps and flies (parasitoids) that lay eggs inside or on their bodies.
These wasp larvae develop internally, inside the Caterpillar's body -feeding on the living caterpillar's tissues.
And eventually one day emerging out from Caterpillar's body to pupate, which ultimately kills the host Caterpillars.
So as you can see how nature is in sync and how Rice crop has natural protection of wasps to protect it against hesperidae butterfly Caterpillars 🐛

It's never enough..! Is it..?
My question to those who do butterfly lifecycle.
So Meet this gorgeous black beauty with gold Pixie dust sprinkled on it.
Male common mormon 🦋 - Papilio species.
I have a garden at my 13 floor apartment home.! I have been growing some plants for butterflies 🦋.
Papilio polytes 🦋 is one of the most common butterflies of India, seen even in concrete jungle.

Though it is a widespread butterfly found throughout tropical and subtropical Asia, ranging from Pakistan across India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, and into southern China. It is also common in Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and the Southwestern islands of Japan..!

It is one of regular visitors of my apartment window garden.
Whenever I see caterpillars on my plants and I nurture them to their adults.
I have the privilege of nurturing
Many many caterpillars from my window plants, providing them with a safe haven to thrive.
It's never enough to do their lifecycle again and again and again..!

In 2010 I didn't know that there is a butterfly family 🦋 Hesperiidae, where most butterflies look like a moth.
Then I happened to study butterflies from BNHS and l learnt that these are a type of butterflies (skippers).
They have thick, stout bodies and brown/grey coloring similar to moths, but behave like butterflies by flying during the day and many other features which makes them a 🦋.

Hesperidae Butterflies 👇

Body Structure: Unlike the sleek, dainty bodies of typical butterflies, skippers have thick, muscular, and often hairy thoraxes.

Resting Posture: They often hold their wings in a "jet plane" position—hindwings spread flat and forewings angled up—rather than closing them completely over their backs like other butterflies.

Many species of this family have dull colors (brown, orange, black) that mimic moths.

Antennae- While they have clubbed tips (a butterfly trait), their antennae are often widely separated at the base and hooked backward, resembling a hybrid form.

Nevertheless, despite their appearance, skippers are butterflies and differ from moths.
