Hemakumar had been hunting options to learn basic , or to say the least making using metal hardware :-D since a long time. He finally managed to find me . He was hesitant at first , as he was unsure about the joinery bit. My website does provide a bit more information than required :-D.
Hemakumar decided to do an advanced in methods. We covered the of a Lap joint, by making a prototype of a table base based on a Japanese .Then moved onto the mortise and tenon and finally went crazy over the dovetails. The result was a for a TV unit. We used basic tools to ensure we maintain the minimalistic approach. This helps ensure that the participant gets a feel of building using simple tools at their disposal. He realised he has a strong affection and understanding of design ,however since he is some one who learns by doing, preferred making prototypes to understand how each joinery worked. As a special gesture we tried our hands at an angled lap joint before his workshop ended.
Hemakumar is not new to woodworking as he had built parts of his garden using a circular saw , screws and some pinewood. Now since he has upgraded to joinery he intends to put this to good use and make out door furniture for his home and then focus on indoor utilitarian furniture.

The children’s workshop - Part 3. 8th October was dedicated to Naysa and Zarah. This batch was special as these two had asked me about whittling , and wood carving. So I decided to help them with some simple options . Naysa showed an exemplary affection towards art, with her freehand sketching of the project at hand and Zarah was superfluous with her measurement and calculations. I am now inspired to take up sketching and also get back to my love for geometry.

This is what the session ended with. I followed up with the parents on the progress, and it is grand to relish the vibrant colours the Child’s limitless creativity offers.

The children’s workshop continues. This is more fun. :-) Today I hosted Joanna, Michael, and Mystica. Joanna loves math, yes she does 🙂. Michael kinda loves to make stuff. Joanna ran through her project, with a fantastic speed, which caught me on the wrong foot as I had nothing more to offer her, but a wisecrack “Go forth and help others.” comment 😀

Michael stumbled around the design a bit, however, he was on track in no time. They each made monograms of the first alphabet in their name.
Mystica, the youngest at 8 years old was struggling with the build, even with some help from Uncle Rajesh. So we decided to make the monogram for her, and then some. Since she seemed disappointed we asked her what she would like. She asked for a small crucifix to gift her grandparents. So I made it 😀

Now the long wait while the kids add some color to these creations and complete their homework 🙂

Onwards to the 8th of October 2022. 😀

Today I had the pleasure of mentoring three enthusiastic . Jaden, Jesse and Darien. They graced me with their presence for an introductory woodworking workshop. I decided to start their journey with a pure unadulterated experience. No Jigs, simple tools and a whole lot of fun.
The experienced a whiff of mathematics calculation and raw power. These are children who are and have always built things using paper and cardboard, were finally working with Wood. We decided to make the first alphabet of their name, brainstorming the process of how. They went completely berserk when they realized their alphabet could prop up straight, in 3D format, and was not a flat cutout.
It was fantastic to see their logical questioning pattern, their open-mindedness of ideas, and their innovative solutions to a problem. The three brought some interesting High Octane energy to the workspace with sweet chaos throughout the session. I enjoyed this awesome experience more than them, the naughty sneaky smiles, cheeky remarks, silly solutions, and ideas. What a wonderful day :-D
They went home with their newly earned prized possessions, with plans to sand and paint these. I am so looking forward to the final result. Until then...... 🙂

Andon Lamp Series
This is a . I remember being fascinated by the in the series . So I decided to make some more small lamps. The outdoor lamps featured in the show, ( the ones meant to be used for outdoors lighting ) or the ( round bulbous lamps made of stripped bamboo ) ,will take me some time to learn, so I decided to try and tackle the simpler . These are also called as they are small enough to keep as a night lamp.
I started making these to house the tree lights or Rice lights, that usually get put away in a box, after the season is over. Now these rice lights , end up in a different box made by me, will some superb in a dark room.
The one in the middle, has gone out to the Coutinho Family Adriel, Savia ( ) and Ashley ( they picked the one that was most complex to make and slightly off key, because they believe my effort is very Cleary shown in it ). As a special gesture, Savia gets a frame of a second similar lamp which was work in progress, she can dress it up as she wants.
The one on the right , will be housed with the Ganatra family ( Thanks Vishal, Urvi and Rishab ).
The last one ( the one on the extreme left ) is still with me, it is kinda rustic, and acts as a reminder to me that no matter how hard we try , we can only strive for perfection. To me that is the true beauty of hand made curios.
I may make more of these, so feel free to drop me a message if you are interested in one or learning to make one.
Dimensions : 4” Wide x 4” Deep x 4” tall ( 100 mm x 100 mm x 100 mm) approx.

Now that I know Darsh a little bit more, from the few days we spend on his project. I would say, “Keep an eye out for his work, it is going to be wonderful.” Darsh is a meticulous, humble and level headed person. It clearly shows in his approach towards his builds. He has dabbled in making some wooden units in the past, however he wanted to get some experience in the process of making something functional. He wanted to have an experience in working on a project in totality. He had attended a basic wood working workshop and since then had developed a keen interest for this craft. We decided to make a two shelved bedside table for his room. This one can later accommodate a drawer too. He procured a 16” wide piece of wood to bring this to life. This took a little longer than the two days speculated .

During this time we had our interesting conversations about the benefits of using power tools in comparison to only hand tools. Also it does save up on time.

This unit has dovetails joinery for the table top, and mortise and tenons for the sides. The mortise and tenons do protrude from the sides. Darsh added simple to the which did change the entire look of the unit.

P.S. Thank you for the 3D printed centre finder and the glue dispenser adaptor, Darsh. Such gifts are truly cherished and I promise to use them. :-)

Sameer is a computer automation professional, he wanted to upskill himself to repurpose furniture that comes to his dad’s junk yard.
He has tried his hands at making furniture before and has designed a simple display case for his bakery. He managed to get the same built by a carpenter.
He made this simple dovetailed bench for his home. His objective was clear he wanted to learn joinery techniques to up-skill himself.
He is now better equipped to understand how joinery works and explain the build to his team.

The woodpeckers - Shilpa and Tresa attended a basic woodworking workshop on the 12th and 13th of February 2022. We decided to try a laptop table with slightly splayed legs for Shilpa and a desktop table for Tresa. Shilpa’s piece would have a through mortise and tenon, where the mortises would be cut at a slight angle , to give the legs a bit of a splay. Tresa’s table would have two sets of dovetail and a shelf with a blind mortise and tenon.
Two interesting project in two days.
