In the bustling streets of India, you’ll often find families in search of their dream home, a sprawling space filled with rooms, balconies, and, of course, a small garden. But have you ever paused to think: is bigger really better? At Square Feet 9, me and Himanshu are challenging this age-old notion, especially for the Indian middle class. Let’s explore why embracing smaller living spaces might just be the key to a happier, more practical life.

The Shrinking Family Dynamic:

Let’s start with the obvious. Families in India are getting smaller. Gone are the days when three generations lived under one roof, sharing meals and memories. Today, children are moving to other places for work, and parents often find themselves alone in their sprawling abodes.

According to the National Family Health Survey, nearly 54% of households are nuclear, and the trend is growing. It’s like buying a massive car when you only need to drive to the grocery store. Sure, the SUV looks impressive, but do you really need to parallel park that monster every time? Smaller homes can offer just the right amount of space without the hassle.

The Domestic Help Dilemma:
Next, let’s tackle the issue of domestic help. In a world where many middle-class families aspire to own large homes, they often overlook the crucial aspect of upkeep. With busy schedules, who has the time to maintain that vast living space?

a survey by UrbanClap found that around 60% of urban households in India employ domestic help. But what happens when the help is unavailable? A large home can quickly transform from a palace into a burden.

Imagine living in a cozy apartment where every square foot is utilized. The charm of smaller spaces is that they often require less upkeep. You can spend your weekends enjoying quality time with your loved ones instead of vacuuming a 3,000-square-foot mansion!

Age is Just a Number (Until It’s Not):

As we grow older, our needs change. One of the most overlooked aspects of home design is accessibility. Independent homes often lack the infrastructure to install elevators, making it challenging for aging family members or anyone facing mobility issues.

A report from the United Nations suggests that by 2050, India will have nearly 320 million senior citizens. So, why invest in a home that could become a maze of stairs for your future self?

Consider a modern apartment building with thoughtful design elements: ramps, elevators, and communal areas where you can connect with your Neighbours. Consider living in well-designed spaces where convenience and accessibility are part of the package!

Safety First:

Security and home safety is another valid concern. Independent homes often lack the security features found in apartments or gated communities. It’s no surprise that home safety systems are becoming a must-have, rather than an afterthought. You might feel like a king in your castle, but let’s face it: a large house can be a big target.

Smaller communities offer a sense of belonging, along with added security. When your Neighbours know each other, it’s easier to feel safe and supported. Plus, you can finally ditch that overzealous home alarm system you never understood how to use in the first place!

The Financial Perspective:

From a financial standpoint, the allure of a large home can be tempting. However, the costs associated with maintenance, property taxes, and utility bills can quickly add up. A smaller home, on the other hand, not only saves you money but can also lead to a more sustainable lifestyle. Imagine reallocating those savings toward travel, hobbies, or investing in experiences rather than excess space. As they say, “Collect moments, not things.”

A Thoughtful Approach to Living:
So, as we venture into a world where homes can be both beautiful and functional, it’s time to reconsider our obsession with SIZE. By embracing the concept of smaller, well-designed living spaces, we’re not just enhancing our quality of life—we’re paving the way for more sustainable and thoughtful communities.

In conclusion, let’s make a pact: next time you find yourself enamored with that sprawling large space, take a step back and ask yourself—does it truly serve your lifestyle? Maybe it’s time to embrace the charm of smaller living and rediscover what truly makes a home. After all, less really can be more!

If you’re curious about how downsizing your space can still provide the same aura and lifestyle while meeting your needs, we invite you to reach out to us. Himanshu & I genuinely believe that value and design can coexist. I will conclude this blog with our mission at Square Feet 9.

Our mission is to spread joy by making design accessible to every Indian.
