Gujarat jails have most cameras

AHMEDABAD: Prisons in Gujarat have more than a quarter (27.26%) of India's total 6,796 CCTV cameras installed in prisons. From 2014 to 2015, Gujarat prisons have added 482 cameras, taking the total to 1,853. CCTV camera footage had in July this year provided the breakthrough in 19-year old Pravin Dhaval's daring escape from Sabarmati Central Jail, showing investigators how he had managed to jump the electrified fence - but CCTV could not prevent the incident or raise alarm.
On the other hand, Gujarat stands seventh in India as far as vacancies are concerned. According to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) publication 'Prison Statistics India 2015,' against a sanctioned strength of 2,926 employees, the 27 prisons in Gujarat have 2,076 staff or 71% of capacity.
The state prisons have the ratio of 7 inmates per personnel if only core prison officials are taken into consideration. Highest vacancy is at ground level with 1,360 wardens present against sanctioned strength of 1,744.

CCTV footage sent to Tamil Nadu, Kerala

BENGALURU: The City crime branch sleuths investigating the murder of RSS worker R Rudresh - who was killed on Kamaraj Road on Sunday - have dispatched the CCTV footage they have obtained from the buildings close to the crime scene, to Tamil Nadu and Kerala. City police have requested the cops in the two states to help them identify the two bike-borne assailants.
On Sunday, Rudresh was hacked to death when he was talking to his friends on the busy Kamaraj Road, near Commercial Street. The pillion rider, who was wearing a monkey cap, had sliced Rudresh's neck in a single sweep before the bike sped away. The nature of the injury has given police reason to suspect that it could have been a supari killing.
Pointing out that both states had witnessed similar cases, wherein RSS activists had been killed, senior police officials said, "The modes followed in all these killings are the same. Men come on a motor bike, wait for an opportunity so that they can target his neck, they are very similar. We have contacted senior officials in these states and sought their cooperation in solving the case. We are also hoping that cops in these two states identify the killers."
Meanwhile, cops said that they had questioned more than 50 men in connection with Rudresh's murder. "We have prepared a list containing names of all individuals, with whom he had an issue including many rowdy sheeters," they said.

300 cameras to monitor PM’s route, golden jubilee venue

Gurgaon: The city's civic administration and the police are leaving no stone unturned to ensure the safety of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will visit Gurgaon to attend the golden jubilee celebrations of Haryana on November 1.
The MCG and the Gurgaon police are installing some 300 high-end CCTV cameras along the Prime Minister's route, and in and around the venue, Tau Devi Lal stadium.
According to a senior MCG official, the CCTV cameras will be in place from October 27 to November 1. "CCTV cameras worth Rs 32 lakh will be installed as part of the plan to beef up security ahead of the PM's visit to the city for the golden jubilee celebrations. The aim is to keep a constant watch. The cameras will be connected to control rooms that will be monitored from police headquarters," said the official.
"The system will provide connectivity between the local control room and the nearest police station," he said.
Gurgaon police commissioner Sandeep Khirwar told TOI that the city police will be able to access the CCTV network.
"The CCTV network will help the policemen in making foolproof security arrangements for the event, which will be attended by high-profile guests other than the PM," he said.
Highly placed sources said the cameras will be so powerful that it can even zoom in on very small objects.
The live feed from the cameras will be closely monitored by the Gurgaon police as well as their Delhi counterparts. Apart from this, the National Security Guards (NSG) will also have access to live footage so that the snipers deployed in highrises could be instructed in case of any emergency.
"It will be for the first time that CCTV cameras are being installed on the entire route that will be taken by the PM. Even the contingency route will have a network of CCTV cameras," said a senior official.
Speaking about the features of the CCTVs, another official said cameras will have night vision mode too. "The lens will have the capability to focus on large areas as well on small unidentified objects," he added.
Also, the cameras will be capable to reconginse faces and vehicle numbers. It will have sufficient capacity of hard disk to cover the full event, the official added.

Catch him if you can: ATM cameras record operator making good with cash

Lucknow: Nobody got hurt in these bank heists though somebody made a killing. A youth in his 20s has been stealing from banks and the tool he has been using is the ATM machine.
The cyber cell of Lucknow police is working on a case related to ATM fraud. The miscreant who is being hunted is either well aware of the back-end operations of ATM machines, or has learned ways to hack them. According to estimate of police's cyber cell experts, the youth was able to boot the machine briefly during the transaction because of which transaction was not recorded but he got the money nonetheless. The team working on the case feels he may have left the city and may be at work somewhere else.
Representatives of the ATM company that was targeted alerted Hazratganj-based cyber cell recently about the fraud. During internal investigations, which began in April, the company and the bank noticed three suspicious transactions in their ledger.
As in all three cases amounts ranged between Rs 18,000 and Rs 20,000 withdrawn at ATM, the CCTV footage was scanned. In all the cases, the same youth was caught on cameras installed at ATM booths. To hide his face, he used a hoodie or a cap. KYC form of the savings account of the ATM card holder was examined. "The mobile number mentioned was incorrect and so was the address. It seems the youth or some of his associates furnished incorrect documents to bank," said VVS Sirohi, officer-in-charge of cyber cell.
Through footage it was found that the youth walked out of the booth with wads of currency notes. But surprisingly, the money was not deducted from his account. "Such frauds have been taking place in southern parts of the country for the past four years. ATM machines follow a set of protocols. With manipulation, programming frauds can be committed," said cybercrime expert and additional police superintendent Triveni Singh.
In November 2014, a 15-member gang was busted in Bengaluru, Karnataka who worked for ATM operations company. The gang swindled more than Rs 66 lakh within four months by exploiting the loopholes, a trick they had learned during their stint with the company.

CCTV Shows Indian Girl, 6, Fought Attacker Who Had An Axe

MELBOURNE: A six-year-old Indian girl has won praise for her brave attempt at stopping an axe-wielding robber, who attacked an employee at her father's store in New Zealand in a burglary.
Sarah Patel was captured on CCTV trying to defend the staff member when a group of six armed men broke into the family's electrical shop in Auckland on Monday.
The footage shows the masked men kicking, punching and threatening employees with an axe and a crowbar, or iron lever, and smashing cabinets and stealing thousands of dollars worth of electronics.

Sarah Patel, who was caught up in the violent drama, is seen in the video rushing towards one of the attackers standing over an employee with an axe, and tries to get him to stop his attack.
The girl grabbed onto the leg of the man during the armed incident that ended in a dramatic police chase from the North Shore to west Auckland.
She told the New Zealand Herald she was "trying to save" the employee and that she "wasn't scared" of the bad guy.
When Sarah Patel glimpsed the attacker's axe she fled. She later helps her grandfather out of the room and away from danger.
Her father Mr Suhail Patel told TVNZ he was "proud" of his daughter and though she had been shaken by the incident, she was recovering well.

"Last night she was very upset. Was in shock. We've been trying to say to her 'You're the bravest girl', that sort of thing," he said.
Mr Suhail said his daughter was extremely brave facing up to the man as he was holding what appeared to be a small axe.
"I'm proud of her, definitely."
The proud father added his daughter was "always trying to help people" and he was not surprised she sprung into action.
The video shows her being shoved aside by the man then helped up by her grandfather.
Sarah Patel's mother Ms Nashrin said her daughter initially thought the attacker was her father.

After the intruders fled, they were pursued across West Auckland by police - as well as Sarah Patel, her mother and grandfather, who gave chase in their family car.
They were eventually stopped by police road spikes laid out for them.
Five 16-year-old boys have been charged with aggravated robbery, injuring with intent and breaching bail.
A sixth suspect is still to be found.
Several newspapers around the world today reported Sarah Patel's "astonishing bravery", calling her "fearless".

Railways Gets Rs. 1,656 Crore For Installing Bio-Toilets, Cameras

NEW DELHI: In a boost to the railways' cleanliness and safety drives, the cash-strapped public transporter has received Rs. 1,655 crore from the government for the installation of CCTVs at stations and bio-toilets in trains across the country.

While Rs. 1,155 crore has been given to the railways for installing bio-toilets in trains under Swachh Bharat Mission, it has got Rs. 500 crore under Nirbhaya Fund for putting all major stations under CCTV surveillance for enhancing passenger safety and security.

"We have got special grant of Rs. 1,155 crore for installing bio-toilets in trains which will result in taking Swachh Bharat Mission a step forward ensuring cleanliness," Railway Board Chairman AK Mital told PTI.

The railways has set the target of making the entire network as discharge-free zone by September 2019.

Mital said apart from cleanliness and environment-friendly effect, the life of tracks will increase by way of reduction in rustings of rails as fitting of bio-toilets will prevent open discharge on the track.

Over 40,000 bio-toilets are being installed in trains and 30,000 more will be installed by the end of the current fiscal. All new proposed trains like Tejas, Humsafar will be equipped with bio-toilets.

Besides new trains, the railways has plans to replace all conventional toilets with bio-toilets in regular trains to make the entire rail tracks free of human waste discharge.

Highlighting the safety and security of passengers as "paramount importance" for the railways, Mital said, "We have received Rs. 500 crore for installation of CCTV systems at around 1,000 stations. The aim is to enhance safety and security of passengers, particularly women."

At present, the railways has CCTV systems at around 100 stations and according to the plan, all major stations will be put under the surveillance system to improve security.

Mital said the CCTV system will enable the railways to keep a watch on unscrupulous elements at rail premises to prevent crive, including trafficking of children.

Kabaddi Player's Murder Is On Camera. Shot Repeatedly In The Head.

ROHTAK:The daylight murder of a national-level kabbadi player in Rohtak has been recorded by security cameras at a house near the killing.

The athlete, Sukhvinder Narwhal, was shot dead yesterday while walking home from practice by a pair of men on a scooter in his village in Haryana .

Mr Narhwal appears to be talking on his cellphone as the scooter approaches him. He falls to the ground after taking a bullet. The men - both in black pants, one wearing neon pink sneakers - then get off the scooter and shoot him over and over in the head. At one point, the kabaddi player, lying on the ground, turns over to his side after being shot before slowly falling back onto the road.

The murderers have yet to be identified by the police.

Just three months ago, another kabaddi player named Deepak Kumar was killed after men on a motorcycle shot at him in a deserted part of Rohtak. He lay on the roadside for nearly half an hour before his brother arrived to help him.
