Munger: City of Yoga

Munger, the beautiful rural village overlooking the river Ganga, is home to the Bihar School of Yoga, Bihar Yoga Bharati, Yoga Research Foundation and Yoga Publications Trust.

Munger is a place of great spiritual and historical significance. Sri Rama and Sita rested here during their exile before returning to Ayodhya. King Karna of Mahabharata fame, elder brother of the five Pandavas, performed and perfected ta***ic sadhanas here. Lord Buddha and more recent eminent personalities such as Rabindranath Tagore and Swami Vivekananda came to Munger to rest and pursue their spiritual sadhana and studies. Sri Swami Sivananda Saraswati visited Munger in 1936 after the devastating earthquake and held kirtans in the town.

Sri Swami Satyananda Saraswati, the founder of Bihar School of Yoga, experienced the supreme bliss of the highest state of consciousness in Munger. He had the revelation that ‘Yoga is the culture of tomorrow’ and that he should create a global fraternity of yoga. Here he realized his mission to be the elevation of human consciousness by bringing to light and disseminating the science of yoga.

In 2004 Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, President of India (2002-2007) named Munger the ‘City of Yoga’.

Vikramashila was one of the two most important centres of learning in India during the Pala Empire, along with Nalanda. Vikramashila was established by King Dharmapala (783 to 820) in response to a supposed decline in the quality of scholarship at Nalanda. Atisha, the renowned pandita, is sometimes listed as a notable abbot.
Vikramashila was one of the largest Buddhist universities, with more than one hundred teachers and about one thousand students. It produced eminent scholars who were often invited by foreign countries to spread Buddhist learning, culture and religion. The most distinguished and eminent among all was Atisha Dipankara, a founder of the Sarma traditions of Tibetan Buddhism. Subjects like philosophy, grammar, metaphysics, Indian logic etc. were taught here, but the most important branch of learning was tantrism.
It was destroyed by the forces of Muhammad bin Bakhtiyar Khilji around 1193 CE.
Vikramashila (village Antichak, district Bhagalpur, Bihar) is located at about 50 km east of Bhagalpur and about 13 km north-east of Kahalgaon, a town in Bhagalpur district . It is approachable through 11 km long motorable road diverting from NH-80 at Anadipur about 2 km from Kahalgaon. taa
