The name Sariputta means “son of Sari.” Born and raised in a devout Brahmin family, his journey began with a deep search for truth. That search eventually led him to the Buddha and transformed his life forever.

This sacred land was also closely associated with Venerable Sariputta, the Buddha’s chief disciple on the right, renowned as foremost in wisdom.

But what happened here that transformed Nalanda into one of the greatest centres of knowledge in the ancient world?

For more than 800 years, scholars from distant lands travelled to Nalanda in search of knowledge and wisdom.

From a sacred Buddhist landscape, it grew into a remarkable institution of learning — influencing the development of Buddhist education across Asia for centuries.

Today, the ruins of Nalanda stand as a powerful reminder of that extraordinary intellectual and spiritual heritage.

🏔️ THE LEGEND OF DHANKAR — THE NIGHT THE MONASTERIES ROSE

High above the Spiti Valley, where the mountains seem to touch the sky, stands the ancient Dhankar Monastery — a place that was once much more than a monastery.

Dhankar was the traditional capital of the Spiti kingdom, the seat of the Nono rulers and a natural fortress overlooking the valley. Its very name is associated with a fort on a cliff.

But the people of Spiti tell another story…

Long ago, when darkness covered the valley, a mysterious magician is said to have arrived in Spiti.

He possessed powers beyond the ordinary world.

The legend says that he decided to build monasteries across the valley — not slowly, stone by stone, but in a single night.

As the moon travelled across the Himalayan sky, the magician moved from mountain to mountain.

🏔️ One monastery appeared on a cliff.
🏔️ Another rose above the valley.
🏔️ Another stood like a fortress against the mountains.

By the time the first light of dawn touched the peaks, the work was finished.

The magician disappeared.

And the people awoke to find the mountains filled with monasteries.

🏔️ The Story Behind Dhankar Fort — A Fortress Above the Clouds

High in the remote mountains of Spiti Valley, where the cliffs rise dramatically above the Spiti River, stands the ancient Dhankar Fort.

But this is more than just an old stone structure.

For centuries, Dhankar was an important seat of power and administration in Spiti. The fort and palace were associated with the local rulers, while the nearby Dhankar Monastery served as an important spiritual centre.

Built into a seemingly impossible mountainside, the settlement was naturally protected by steep cliffs and deep valleys. From here, one could see far across the valley — making Dhankar not only a place to live, but also a strategic location.

Only horses, mountain paths and the sound of the wind moving through the cliffs.
