The Lipstick tree

Botanical name: Bixa orellana.
Also know as Sindur plant.


Although a native of West Indies, lipstik tree has been cultivated in India for many centuries for the yellow-orange dye obtained from its seeds, which is still used as a safe coloring agent for foods. It is also used in the cosmetic industry in the production of nail gloss, hair oil, lipstick, soap and in household products like floor wax, furniture polish, shoe polish, brass lacquer and wood stain.
Apart from the above mentioned uses the plant is also used for various medicinal reasons and also used as a mosquito repellent.
