Ayya vaikunda Smarakam-A library and cultural centre, rooted in the life and philosophy of Ayya vaikunda swamikal,is a democratic space for knowledge and expression.
The building is a collage of materiality from two distinct architecture styles he was a part of, the stone masonry from Dravidian architecture and the wood and clay language of kerala. The built form is designed in the formal quality of the ’ chuttambalam’, resembling a temple, which once restricted the lower castes including Ayya Vaikundar.
But here the deity is replaced by a space of knowledge and expressions enabling self reflection, inspired from the Kannadi Prathishta (mirror installation) by Swami Ayya vaikunda swamikal in early 1800’s.

The library, children’s library, amphitheater and the performance space

Ayya Vaikunda Smarakam-a library and cultural centre, rooted in the life and philosophy of Ayya vaikunda swamikal the acts as an extended city, inviting everyone in its democratic space for knowledge and expression

Knowledge is complete only when one could express the acquired knowledge, the building renders an opportunity for that, the library in the building is placed at the centre , surrounded by spaces of knowledge expressions , the amphitheatre, the coworking spaces, workshops and the continuous ramp for art exhibitions.

Here the building doubles up as an extended street resembling the city’s manaveeyam veedhi . Open to expressions and debates, the building becomes a reflection of the city of Trivandrum it is a part of.

In light of the new metro proposal in Thiruvananthapuram city, we thought it would be time to bring back the design proposal we developed for the Light Metro station in Thampanoor in 2016, for DMRC. The proposal was approved by Principal Advisor E. Sreedharan - the “Metro Man” of India. The project was designed and detailed and handed over to DMRC, but the metro never took off, and the station remained only on paper.

The structural framework of a metro station is usually fixed, meaning the scope for a designer typically revolves around the already designed floor plates. Our station was conceived as a connecting public space between the KSRTC bus stand and Thampanoor Railway Station. This connection was crucial because currently the road is extremely difficult for pedestrians to cross due to heavy traffic and typical Indian road behavior.

The station was perceived as a landscaped bridge that would generate revenue for the government while providing the already crowded city center with a much-needed open public space. The spaces directly related to the metro station were segregated for security purposes, but a slight extension of the floor plate created the vital urban connector. The underside of the floor plates, which are usually plain concrete surfaces, was clad with reflective ACP panels. These panels reflect the busy city below, creating the optical illusion of an inverse city.

Perhaps the most important part of the attempt was the effort we made to save some trees that were slated for felling when the metro line was proposed. A minor change in the pathways below and the strategic addition of a bus bay successfully preserved those trees, simultaneously creating a shaded bus bay for the public.

ROOF GARDENS OF SEMIBUILDING-SEMILANDSCAPE
In a site, where exterior space for gardens are limited to setbacks, the family’s outdoor gathering finds its place on the insulating roof-garden which attempts to pay penance for the home’s unavoidable footprint. While acting as a thermal insulating layer, it also hosts seasonal, local, naturalised and culinary plants.

A place where the family can get together in the evenings or festivities, a place where neighbours can come sit and converse.

SemiBuilding SemiLandscape makes it to The Merit List! Thank you to for setting the valedictory against such a well curated, refreshingly inspiring Frames Conclave.

Excited to be back on The Merit List again this season.
SemiBuilding SemiLandscape has a “playful geometric resolution bringing a sense of surprise and wonder to the exterior form and interior spatial logic” in a “modest house on a small site” with “a roof that makes a large and generous gesture.”

Meanwhile A Home Leftover (awarded TML citation in 2023 cycle) displayed “the strength of what architecture can accomplish- employing rigour and design thinking for spatial richness, dignity and delight,”despite the challenge of resources.

A Home Liberated (awarded TML citation in 2023 cycle) was a “project that presented a fresh paradigm for renewal of ancestral houses in family possession with an extremely restrained and dichotomous design process considering continuity in delicate balance with newness, … nostalgia in an equilibrium with anticipation, and darkness in a balance with light.”
