നാട്ടറിവുകൾ
ഋഗ്വേധയിൽ രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുള്ള “സോമരസ” എന്ന പാനീയത്തിലെ അവിഭാജ്യ ഘടകമാണ് സോമലത. സോമലതയില്‍നിന്ന് ലഭിക്കുന്ന നീരാണ്‌സോമയാഗങ്ങളില്‍ മുഖ്യ ഹവിസ്സായി അഗ്നിയില്‍ അര്‍പ്പിച്ചിരുന്നത്. സോമലതയുടെ നീര് പാനം ചെയ്ത് മുനിമാര്‍ ആരോഗ്യം സംരക്ഷിച്ചിരുന്നു എന്നും പറയപ്പെടുന്നു.
വീടുകളിൽ അലങ്കാര ചെടിയായും ഇത് വളർത്തുന്നു.

സോമലതയുടെ വിവിധ ഭാഗങ്ങളായ തണ്ട്, വേര്, വിത്തുകൾ, പശ, പഴങ്ങൾ എന്നിവ വിവിധതരം ഔഷധഗുണങ്ങളുള്ളവയാണ്.

ഈ ചെടിയുടെ നീര് ദേവന്മാർക്ക് സമർപ്പിച്ച ദിവ്യപാനീയമായി കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു, കൂടാതെ സ്വാഭാവിക ആരോഗ്യം വീണ്ടെടുത്തു നല്‍കുന്നു എന്നും ഉണർവും ജാഗ്രതയും നല്കുന്നു എന്നും കരുതുന്നു.

ചെടിയുടെ തണ്ടിലെ നീര് ചെവിയിലുണ്ടാകുന്ന പഴുപ്പിനും നായ കടിച്ചാലും തുള്ളികളായി ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്നു.
വേരുകൾ പാമ്പുകടിയേറ്റ് ചികിത്സിക്കാനും, പേപ്പറ്റിവിഷം, ഛർദി, കുഷ്ഠം എന്നിവയ്ക്കും ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്നു.

സോമലതയുടെ തണ്ടിൻ നീരെടുത്ത് എലികളിൽ നടത്തിയ പഠനങ്ങളിൽ പാർശ്വഫലങ്ങളില്ലാതെ ശുക്ല ചലനവും ശുക്ല സാന്ദ്രതയും ഗണ്യമായി കുറഞ്ഞതായി കാണാൻ സാധിച്ചു.
ഈ ചെടിയുടെ സമൂലസത്തയിൽ നിന്നും വേർത്തിരിച്ചെടുത്ത ലിഗനിൽ(lignans) ഒരെണ്ണമായ സചിദുമ്ലിഗ്നന് എ(Sacidumlignan A) അണുനാശിനി സ്വഭാവം കാഴ്ച വയ്ക്കുന്നു.
തണലിൽ ഉണക്കിയെടുത്ത സോമലത പൂക്കളുടെ സത്ത കരൾസംരക്ഷണവും(hepatoprotective) കോശസംരക്ഷണവും(free radical scavenging effects) നടത്താൻ കഴിവുള്ളവയാണ്.
ഈ ചെടിയുടെ സത്ത ചുവന്ന രക്താണുക്കളുടെ കോശഭിത്തി ദൃഡമാക്കൻ സഹായിക്കുന്നു.
സോമലത സമൂലസത്ത ഉപയോഗിച്ച് നടത്തിയ പഠനങ്ങളിൽ സിഎൻ‌എസ് ഡിപ്രസൻറ്(CNS depressant), ആന്റി സൈക്കോട്ടിക്(antipsychotic), ആൻ‌സിയോലിറ്റിക്(anxiolytic) പ്രഭാവങ്ങൾ കാണിക്കുന്നു.

Withania somnifera dunal അശ്വഗന്ധ (അമുക്കുരം)

പേര് പോലെതന്നെ കുതിരയുടെ മണമാണ് ഇതിന്റെ തണ്ടിന്.

Traditional Ayurvedic Uses:
ആയൂർവേദത്തിൽ പ്രധാനമായും അശ്വഗന്ധയുടെ ഇലകൾ വേരുകൾ എന്നിവ വാതത്തിനും വാജികരണത്തിനുമാണ് പ്രധാനമായി ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത്.
കൂടാതെ വേദന ശമിപ്പിക്കുക, ഹൃദയം-നാഡീ-തലച്ചോറ് ഇവയെ ഉത്തേജിപ്പിക്കുക, ശരീരബലം, ആരോഗ്യം, മുലപ്പാൽ, ശുക്ലം എന്നിവ വർദ്ധിപ്പിക്കാനും ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.

Plant parts and contents:
 ഇലയിൽ നിന്നെടുക്കുന്ന ആൽക്കലോയിഡാണ് വിഥാനോലയിഡ്സ്(withanolides). ഈ ആൽക്കലോയിഡിൽ നിന്ന് വിഥാഫെറിൻ (withaferin) എന്ന പദാർത്തം
 വേർത്തിരിച്ചെടുക്കുന്നു. വിഥാഫെറിനു അനുനാശകശക്തിയുണ്ട്.
 വേരിൽനിന്നും 13 ആൽക്കലോയിഡുകൾ വേർത്തിരിച്ചെടുത്തിട്ടുണ്ട്.
 Anahygrine, meso-anaferine, cuscohygrine, isopelletierine, hygrine, tropine, pseudotropine, 3alpha tigloyloxy tropane, choline, withasomnine, ß-sitosterol, somniferine and withanine.

Madhuca longifolia ഇലിപ്പ
Indian butter tree, mahua tree
Family: Sapotaceae
ഇലിപ്പയുടെ കാതൽ, തൊലി, ഇല, വിത്ത്, എണ്ണ, കായ, പൂവ് എന്നീ ഭാഗങ്ങൾ ആയൂർവേദത്തിൽ ഔഷധമായുപയോഗിക്കുന്നു. ഉത്തരേഡ്യയിൽ ഇലിപ്പ പൂവ് വാറ്റിയുണ്ടാക്കുന്ന മദ്യം(മൗവ) വളരെ വീര്യമുള്ളതും, മധുരമുള്ളതുമാണ്. കായയും പഴവും ഭക്ഷണയോഗ്യമാണ്.

ഇലിപ്പ പൂവിൽ പഞ്ചസാരയുടെ അഡുമിനോയിഡ് പൊട്ടാസ്യം ജലാംശം എന്നിവ അൻപത് ശതമാന ത്തോളം സ്ഥിരതൈലമായി കാണപെടുന്നു. ഇതൊരു തൈറൽ ഗ്ലൂക്കോസ് ഘടനയാണ്. ഇതിന്റെ വിത്തിലും ഗ്ലൂക്കോസ് വളരെ കൂടുതൽ ഉണ്ട്
ഇലിപ്പ കയകളിൽ അരാച്ചിഡിക്(Arachidic), ലിനോലെലിക്(linolelic), ഒലിക്(oleic), മിറിസിക്(myrisic), പാൽമിറ്റിക്(palmitic), സ്റ്റിയറിക് ആസിഡുകൾ(stearic acids), α- അലനൈൻ(α-alanine), അസ്പാർട്ടിക് ആസിഡ്(aspartic acid), സിസ്റ്റൈൻ(cysteine), ഗ്ലൈസിൻ(glycine), ഐസോലൂസിൻ(isoleucine), ലൂസിൻ(leucine), ലൈസിൻ(lysine), മെഥിയോണിൻ(methionine), പ്രോലൈൻ(proline), സെറീൻ(serine), ത്രിയോണിൻ(threonine), മൈറിസെറ്റിൻ(myricetin), ക്വെർസെറ്റിൻ(quercetin), മിസാപോണിൻ എ, ബി(Misaponin A and B). എന്നിവ അടങ്ങിയിരിക്കുന്നു.
പഴങ്ങളിൽ. α- β- അമീറിൻ അസറ്റേറ്റുകൾ (α- and β-amyrin acetates). എന്നിവ അടങ്ങിയിരിക്കുന്നു.

ചെറിയ ഇലകളോട് കൂടി മുള്ളുകളുള്ള ഇടത്തരം വലിപ്പം വയ്ക്കുന്ന ഒരു വൃക്ഷമാണ് വഹ്നി. വരണ്ട കാലാവസ്ഥയുള്ള വടക്കുപടിഞ്ഞാറൻ സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളിലാണ് സാദാരണ കണ്ടുവരുന്നത്.
ഉത്തരേന്ത്യയിൽ ദസറ ഉൽസവത്തിന്റെ അവസാന നാളിൽ
പരസ്പര സ്നേഹവും ആദരവും പങ്കുവെക്കുന്നതിനും പഴയ കൈപ്പ് മറക്കുന്നതിനും വഹ്നി ഇലകൾ പരസ്പരം വിതരണം ചെയ്യുന്നു.

Traditional Uses:
ആടലോടകം ആയൂർവേദത്തിലും യുനാനിയിലും സാധാരണയായി ചുമ കഫം ശ്വാസമുട്ട്, ആസ്തമ, വയറുകടി, വയറിളക്കം, ഛർദി എന്നിവക്ക് ഉപയോഗിച്ചുവരുന്ന ഔഷധ കുറ്റിചെടിയാണ്. ഇലകളും വേരുകളും പൂക്കളുമാണ് ഉപയോഗമൂല്യമുള്ളത്.

ആറ്റലോടകത്തിന്റെ ഇലകളിൽ നിന്ന് ലഭിച്ച അവശ്യ എണ്ണയുടെ വിശകലനത്തിൽ ഫൈറ്റോസ്റ്റെറോളുകൾ, ആന്ത്രാക്വിനോൺസ്(anthraquinones), ആൽക്കലോയിഡുകൾ, പോളിഫെനോൾസ്(polyphenols), ഫ്ലേവനോയ്ഡുകൾ(flavonoids), സാപ്പോണിനുകൾ(saponins), ട്രൈറ്റെർപെനോയിഡുകൾ(triterpenoids) എന്നിവയിൽ വാസിസിൻ, വാസിസിൻ, മയോൺ‌ടോൺ(maiontone), ഡിയോക്സിവാസൈസിൻ(deoxyvasicine) എന്നിവയുടെ എൻ-ഓക്സൈഡുകളും(N-oxides) കാണിച്ചു.
