The oil & gas drilling sector faces a critical workforce challenge that often goes unnoticed.
Very few students gain exposure to rig operations, and the reality of working on a drilling rig is demanding. It requires strong mental resilience, physical endurance, and the ability to work 12 hour shifts day and night in harsh and unpredictable conditions. Unsurprisingly, only a limited number of professionals choose to specialize in this field.
At the same time, a paradox exists in the workforce pipeline.
Fresh graduates struggle to secure opportunities because they lack experience, while many experienced operators remain unable to progress due to the absence of formal certifications.
Another challenge is recruitment itself. Rig operators often hire very few freshers, frequently through recommendations. Even after companies invest significant time and resources in training new personnel, many move to other organizations for better compensation.
If the industry wants to address the growing skill gap in drilling operations, we must rethink how we expose students to this sector, develop structured training pathways, and align experience with recognized certification.
