The lady of the Gallery House is a gardening enthusiast — and has a lovely 30-year-old collection of bonsai to prove this! To give her passion its due, we designed beautiful teakwood stands on both ends of the balcony. On one side, the green corner is accompanied by cosy seating.

And with that, we come to the end of Gallery House… as well as this year!

A happy 2023 to everyone! Here’s to warmth, beauty and closeness to nature in the coming year!

The ablution spaces at The Gallery House have been given due attention, and receive emphatic material applications. The powder room, for instance, teams Jaisalmer stone and white Indian marble. Its winged mirror is designed in a way that it allows access to the window behind. An ensuite bathroom of one of the bedrooms sees a generous use of black, via matte vitrified tiles. White sanitaryware and matte gold-finish fittings, light and mirror frame add a nice contrasting touch.

The master bedroom at The Gallery House is intentionally kept neutral and elegant, with two large artworks above the bed taking the spotlight. The face of the wardrobe is clad in long teak wood slats to create the feel of panelling. The mirror-polished Kota flooring amplifies the grounded beauty of this narrative.

The elder son and his wife wanted a clean and modern room in their home, The Gallery House. We decided to go with a very minimal palette for the room. A wooden flooring was a definite requirement — which has been realised with an engineered wood flooring in a herringbone pattern. A four-poster bed, one more specification, was articulated with a modern twist, by designing it with slim sections of brass to make it look sleek and modern. This became a central element, with everything else being subdued and finished in polished teak. The seating in the room features a chair with a thin metal frame with wicker on it.

A rustic character with a bit of pop defines the daughter’s private space in The Gallery House. We developed its mood board with exposed brick, teak wood, wicker and kota stone. Most of the organic flavour is thanks to the lovely Turkish pattern brick wall that really highlights the bohemian-print headboard beautifully. The black and white art work mounted on the brick wall also gets its due. The wardrobe features teak wood-edged shutters with wicker infills. With the occupant expressing a desire for a corner to put up collectibles, we created a cosy corner by the window with an adjustable shelving system.

In deference to their request for a dark, cosy and plush room, the younger son’s room was expressed in dark coloured walls and richly grained timber. Fully upholstered in leather, the bed with its sleek metal legs, is placed on an engineered wood floor laid in a diagonal fashion. Memorabilia collected on travels are showcased on ultra-thin metal shelving fixed above the desk and painted the same colour as the wall to create a levitating effect for the curios displayed within. The narrative of the entire room centres on an oversized horizontal artwork. More art — a series of prints — is displayed on a free-standing column near the entrance of the room.

The media room at The Gallery House functions as the family room as well. The C-shaped seating comprises cushy leather recliners that make together-time comfortable. The two ottomans in the centre perform two functions: seating and table-top. You can use them as pouffes, or, if you don’t need that much seating, can tuck them under the simple C-shaped wood-frame tables to create a larger centre piece. The artistic touch continues with two bespoke floor lamps which feature a wooden base and a shade with fine hand-work done on fabric.

In the Gallery House, the room adjoining the living room on the other side was turned into a lounge area. This space is the common area for the three bedrooms and the media room. The plump `chesterfield sofa’ and the low coffee table establish the air of informality. The design of the coffee table is interesting: its top is finished in wood and polish, while the surfaces underneath sport a high-gloss red. A custom-designed wood and brass console occupies the niche.

In the formal living room of The Gallery House, smart pinstriped sofas lend a pleasing crispness to the space. As usual, the narrative was driven by art, installed on the focus wall.

Unveiling one of our recent projects — which we fondly call The Gallery House. The name emerges from art, which occupies the centre of the narrative. We had so much fun working on this home, because a lot of the conversations we had revolved around different artists and their works rather than the design! We also ended up reversing the design process — we spun the narrative around the art rather than co-ordinating art with the overall decor. The foyer itself validates the name of the project. It brings together works by masters such as KG Subramanyan (on the wall panelled in teakwood), Jyoti Bhatt and Jyotsana Bhatt (the other walls adjoining the teak one), heads by Shanta Samanta (on a console inlaid with brass) and Vaikuntam (above the console). Two chola sculptures in black are displayed on a pedestal. Kashmiri carpets strike a rich counterpoint to the sunny yellow of the Jaisalmer floor.

Gentleness of form and subdued materiality are the hallmarks of the house. This bedroom, with its old-world grace, amply illustrates this point.

Paintings, sculptures and and ethnic craft techniques play a big role in heightening the spatial experience of the Khandelwal Residence.
1. The illuminated teakwood staircase — in itself a focal point — is anchored with the help of a bespoke and graceful fibreglass human sculpture with a patina finish displayed on a large wooden platform.

2. The temple, a serene, gracious space sees a striking floral backdrop in mother of pearl and coloured stone blooming in a sea of pristine white marble.
