ARCHITECT magazine has published a great feature on SOAK: Rituals of Collective Belonging, our exhibition selected to represent Iceland at the 2027 Venice Architecture Biennale.

"What makes SOAK especially compelling is its expanded definition of architecture.

Rather than celebrating a single building, the pavilion examines a network of spaces, behaviors, and cultural practices.
Its focus is not an iconic structure, but a civic ecosystem.

In doing so, it reflects a broader shift in architectural discourse. Increasingly, architects are placing greater value on participation, care, and social relationships."

VENICE ARCHITECTURE BIENNALE 2027

Við erum stolt að segja frá því að sýningin okkar Samfélag í bleyti, í sýningarstjórn Marcosar Zotes, eins eigenda Basalt arkitekta, hefur verið valin sem framlag Íslands á Feneyjatvíæringinn í arkitektúr 2027.

Sýningin er unnin af Basalt, Gagarin og Rán Flygenring og veltir upp spurningum um samfélagslegt hlutverk arkitektúrs og setur íslenska baðmenningu fram sem einstakan vettvang jafnræðis og mótvægi við aukinn einmanaleika og sundrung samtímans.

Miðstöð hönnunar og arkitektúrs hönnunar og arkitektúrs hefur umsjón með íslenska skálanum fyrir hönd Menningar-, nýsköpunar- og háskólaráðuneytið.

Við hlökkum til að færa íslenska baðmenningu til Feneyja árið 2027!

We are proud to share that our exhibition SOAK: Rituals of Collective Belonging, curated by our partner Marcos Zotes, has been selected as Iceland’s contribution to the Venice Architecture Biennale 2027.

Developed by Basalt Architects, Gagarin and Rán Flygenring, the exhibition explores Icelandic bathing culture as a unique social infrastructure and a space for collective belonging.

The Icelandic Pavilion is commissioned and managed by Iceland Design and Architecture on behalf of the Ministry of Culture, Innovation and Higher Education of Iceland.

We look forward to bringing this conversation to Venice in 2027!

Gestum hátíðarinnar er boðið að kíkja við, hitta teymið og kynna sér valin verkefni stofunnar.

Frábærar fréttir! Við hjá Basalt Arkitektum höfum verið valin til áframhaldandi þróunar á nýrri menningarmiðstöð í Smáralind.

Menningarmiðstöðin verður staðsett í um 900 m² rými í austurhluta Smáralindar og er henni ætlað að verða opið og lifandi umhverfi sem sameinar bókasafn, viðburðaaðstöðu og skapandi vinnusvæði fyrir fjölbreyttan hóp notenda.

Við mat á tillögum var lögð áhersla á skýra hugmynd, gott flæði, aðgengi, sveigjanleika, notagildi, sjálfbærni og hagkvæmni.

Við hlökkum til að þróa verkefnið áfram í samstarfi við Heimar og Kópavogsbær, og taka enn frekar þátt í að styrkja Smáralind sem öflugan áfangastað fyrir menningu og mannlíf.

Áætlað er að opna menningarmiðstöðina vorið 2027.

Competition win! Basalt Architects has been selected to design a new cultural centre at Smáralind.

The cultural centre will be located within a 900 m² space in the eastern part of Smáralind and is envisioned as an open and dynamic environment combining a library, event facilities, and creative workspaces for a diverse group of users.

The evaluation of proposals placed emphasis on a clear concept, strong flow, accessibility, flexibility, usability, sustainability, and feasibility.

We look forward to continuing the development of the project in collaboration with Heimar and Kópavogsbær, contributing to further strengthening Smáralind as a vibrant destination for culture and everyday life.

The centre is expected to open in spring 2027.

Today we celebrate the opening of Gróa Sælkeraverslun — a new gourmet deli in downtown Reykjavík that we designed. In today’s newspaper, the owners say:

“We hired Basalt Architects to design the interior space, and they did an excellent job of translating our vision into a plan. The space was very outdated and dark when we received the keys and required extensive work. Basalt helped us brighten it up and bring what could be described as our feminine touch, where soft colours and curved lines are prominent, into the design.”

Basalt has been working on several new food-related destinations. Alongside Gróa, we recently completed the restaurant Makona in Borgartún and the new food hall Garðurinn in Smáralind.

The work has already shown its value. Visitor numbers at Smáralind have exceeded expectations, with guest numbers nearly 20% higher than a typical December and 25% higher in January.

Congratulations to everyone involved in these projects!

Belinda Navi og Þorgerður Ólafsdóttir opna í dag Gróu Sælkeraverslun í Tryggvagötu 26 og setja jurtafæði í aðalhlutverk í miðborginni. Þar verður heitur hádegismatur, réttir til að taka með og hilla full af sælkeravörum með íslenskum framleiðendum í forgrunni.

His message to the industry was clear: “Don’t be a square.” Real innovation demands collaboration, courage, and a willingness to challenge convention.

Our project at Katla UNESCO Global Geopark - Iceland has been awarded the 2025 Ferðamálastofa / Icelandic Tourist Board Environmental Prize. Representatives from the Geopark, Rangárþing eystra and Landowners at Þorvaldseyri received the prize. Congratulations to all involved and thank you for a great collaboration.

Verkefnið okkar fyrir Kötlu Jarðvang hlaut umhverfisverðlaun Ferðamálastofu 2025. Fulltrúar Jarðvangsins, Rangárþings Eystra og Landeigendur á Þorvaldseyri tóku við verðlaununum. Til hamingju allir sem tóku þátt og takk fyrir frábært samstarf.

When EYJAFJALLAJÖKULL erupted, the very name was engrained in millions of people's memories as they struggled to pronounce it. Since the eruption, people have streamed to the location to capture a picture of the glacier with Þorvaldseyri in the foreground, sometimes standing on Highway One for the shot. This intervention is a safety measure but at the same time gives informative geological information to deepen visitor's understanding of the eruption, it's impact and the Katla Global Geopark region.

We are excited and proud to see Garðurinn in Smáralind open today! Basalt have had the pleasure of working with Heimar and a big team of talented, passionate people who have worked hard to make this project a reality. Go to Garðurinn, have a look, taste and enjoy some music and nice atmosphere.

Við erum spennt og stolt að sjá Garðinn Mathöll opna í dag í Smáralind. Við höfum átt einstaklega ánægjulegt samstarf við Heima og stórt teymi hæfileikaríks og ástríðufulls fólks sem hefur lagt hart að sér að láta þetta verkefni verða að veruleika. Kíkið við, njótið matar og tónlistar í notalegu umhverfi.
