Do you know what "camottatura" is?
The word comes from the Greek, Kamòs which means to block. It was a technique used especially in Mediterranean countries between the 8th and 16th century. Wood boards would be covered with strips of fine linen or h**p. These strips would be glued to the board using rabbits glue. The surface would then be prepared with gesso di Bologna and rabbits glue again then lightly sanded. The result is an incredibly smooth surface, ideal for painting!
We'll be offering Camottatura courses this spring with our master restorer Ivano Sarrecchia so stay tuned!

Still in awe of all the beautiful masterpieces we saw at the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria the other day.
We really fell in love with these panels, so much so that we've decided to produce a small series of them.
Museums are places of inspiration, you know?

Chinese porcelain and tea-drinking were the rage of fashionable Europe when Jean-Étienne Liotard was born. He began painting tea and coffee sets in the last two decades of his life when age, changes in taste, and his political beliefs caused a decline in requests for the pastel portraits that were his specialty. Only five of his paintings of tea and coffee sets are known today. Jean-Étienne Liotard was born in 1702.
