HAUS FÜR LISA UND BERT
Ratsching (BZ) 2024
Project
The project focuses on preserving the historic residential and agricultural building in Racines, maintaining its roof geometry, existing structure, and promoting sustainable construction. The attic's height allowed for a three-level design, creating two residential units: a holiday apartment on the lower floor and a second home for the young owners, Lisa and Bert, spanning the ground floor and attic. Living and sleeping areas are separated to enhance spatial quality, reversing traditional layouts. Sleeping quarters are on the ground floor, while living spaces occupy the attic, maximizing openness and views of the surrounding landscape.
Interiors
The ground floor retains much of the original structure. A former barn was converted into covered parking, leading to a bright entrance space for storage and transition. The characteristic central corridor, defined by load-bearing walls, connects to the sleeping quarters and ends in a wooden bay window offering northern light and panoramic views.
A wooden staircase leads to the attic, where an open-plan living room and kitchen stretch from east to west. Exposed wooden beams and skylights provide natural light and connect the space to the landscape. A new dormer window houses a guest WC.
Materials and Exterior
The existing structure supports a new wooden attic, plastered and painted in light tones. Balconies in untreated larch wood reference traditional alpine aesthetics, developing a gray patina over time. Slender metal railings and vertical wooden slats on the attic's east and west facades provide privacy, prevent bird collisions, and blend with the environment.
