Passive cooling

Passive cooling is a building design approach that focuses on heat gain control and heat dissipation in a building to improve indoor thermal comfort with low or no energy consumption. It works by using shade and insulation to keep heat out of the buildings, in hot weather conditions. The passive cooling design is based on 3 main design features:
- an elevated floor.
- a steeply pitched roof with long overhangs.
- a large open terrace.

This term emphasizes the importance of community and cooperatives. It is essentially about togetherness, and how all of our actions have an impact on others. Ubuntu is a capacity that expresses compassion, reciprocity, dignity, harmony, and humanity in the interests of the building and maintaining a community with justice and mutual caring.

Bionics Design - Voronoi Tessellation

Modern design methods rely on understanding the processes of nature, the principles of self-organization of biological structures, and their representation using ma mathematical models. The Voronoi diagram is an example of Bionic Design. The Voronoi Tessellation describes a system of the self-organization of biological structures visible on many natural elements in nature such as the wing of a dragonfly, the turtle shell, honeycomb or the shell of a sea urchin, and the leaves of the trees, just to mention few.

The Warka Village’s Passive Design strategies are based on a series of architectural design solutions to develop buildings able to respond adequately to climatic requirements, among other contextual necessities. The goal is to reduce, or eliminate, the need for additional cooling and reduce temperature fluctuations, improve indoor air quality and make a home drier and more enjoyable to live in. It also reduces energy use and environmental impacts such as greenhouse gas emissions.

Natural Interior Ventilation

Natural ventilation creates a thermally comfortable indoor environment in houses. The human body level is the most vital area for ventilation for comfort. Maximum ventilation should be guaranteed by providing large openings and clear airflow without obstructions in the interiors should be provided. Maximum shading should also be provided to resist the direct as well as diffused solar radiation. The cross ventilation throughout the house is maintained so the internal thermal comfort of the structure is guaranteed.

Bioclimatic Architecture

Bioclimatic architecture uses the energy of the sun (sunlight, wind, etc) combined with thermal absorbing or insulating materials to establish comfort temperature in the house with the lowest carbon footprint possible. Bioclimatic architecture is equally important to Natural Building philosophy because its benefits will last as long as the house is inhabited. In humid tropical environments, for instance, the natural ventilation in the premises and the living area is one of the passive bioclimatic strategies that can be used.

It is a relatively new term that describes a building philosophy that makes only use of local, carefully selected, or recycled materials, renewable resources, simple tools, and handmade techniques. In almost any environment, nature provides us with the building materials that we need. Since these materials need the least amount of processing or transportation, the economic and environmental costs are low. Some of these materials are renewable (trees and straw), and others (rocks and soil) are practically inexhaustible.

Climatic Control: Orientation
-
Orienting a particular building in the direction of the prevailing wind is important. For this, we need to know the local wind patterns. The airflow can be increased by arranging buildings in random order. This ensures that wind velocity in the building is the later path of the wind will not be substantially reduced. However, the solar path is equally important in deciding the orientation of the building. The urban layout helps form a good natural ventilation flow and solar exposure for a better inner environment.

Christina

We would like to share with you this important initiative. Funds are needed to help the pygmy children living at the Warka Village in Cameroon. We would like to start by asking you to support Christina, at 7 years of age the oldest child is still young enough to start attending school.

Christina is a member of the Bibambi II Pygmy community. She and all the other children are unable to attend school simply because these families cannot pay the school fees, nor afford the necessary books, uniforms, shoes, supplies, and transportation.

They don’t have any education and therefore do not have the same opportunities as others. Without the opportunities that education enables, these families will remain trapped in a cycle of poverty and will continue to be marginalized and discriminated against.

Together, if we only each contribute a little, we will each be part of changing the future.
