The third and final part of the ‘British School’ lectures. Gilbert leaves for Ireland and eventually home - two young Brits step in to dominate the Scottish North and London/Bath centric South and challenge the status quo with fresh - modern - takes on the now established pictorial language in a world of Romantic Enlightment, jostling Imperialism and looming Industrial Revolution. - 21/05/26

The second part of our exploration of the ‘British School’ of painters. An upstart from the ‘New World’ absorbs the lessons of the three biggest portrait painters in London-centric, 18th c. European Art and pushes the envelope towards contemporary portraiture by injecting a fresh perspective in the midst of global wars of independence and revolution: Gilbert Stuart. - 14/05/26

We resume the yearly lecture programme by beginning our exploration of the ‘British School’ of painters. We trace the stylistic stagnation of the fashionable manner of grand portraiture following the death of Van Dyck towards the end of the 17th century in Britain and reveal how the baton was to be taken up by 18th century (not only British) members of the new Enlightenment whose ground work would ensure the place of portrait painting in the DNA of British Art. The first part of a series of chronological lectures on this period.
