The LIONS of EL ALAMEIN is a Block-based historical simulation game that deals with the three battles fought between the Axis and the Commonwealth near the infamous railway station from 1 July to 5 November 1942.
The game was created as part of a larger historical research project focused on acquiring primary sources to resolve debated questions and better explain the reasoning behind the battle, its bitter duration over four months, the outcome of a Commonwealth victory, and near simultaneous opening of the Allied Second Front.
The research allowed the detailed drawing of a topographic map covering the theatre of operations at a scale of 1:100,000. Every road, contour line, orchard, oasis, well, building, and cairn were placed in the exact position together with the main trigonometric points used for artillery calibration and orientation in the desert.
The orders of battle have also been studied with particular interest for Table Of Equipment (TOE), correcting some false myths and finally allowing the ghost division Sabratha and many other units that played a key role in the fateful 125 days of battle to re-emerge from the sands of oblivion.
For the mechanics, a new ad hoc modular engine has been created that integrates Strategy, Logistics, Inventiveness, and Tactics (SLIT) to guarantee historical reliability, simplicity of gameplay, and replay ability, while maintaining “Fog of War” and some of the logical algorithms developed for previous VentoNuovo historical simulation games.
The game offers two short scenarios (Lightfoot South and Lightfoot North) to learn the engine, and three scenarios (The First El Alamein, Alam Halfa, and The Last El Alamein) to relive the three critical battles fought at El Alamein from July 1 to November 5, 1942.
Each scenario has its own historical setup instructions plus a graphic representation of the Blocks and DWs either superimposed on the mapboard (Scenario 1,2, and 5) or available as setup sheets.
The three long scenarios offer some extra rules to increase historical immersion, and then for extremely expert players there is a set of optional rules.
Although based on historical facts, the game challenges you through the application of SLIT and offers the possibility to achieve an outcome different from history.
Will you be able to change history? Will you be able to win with the Axis before Montgomery arrives and revolutionizes Allied tactics, strategy and logistics? Will you be able to achieve even more total and rapid success with the Commonwealth?
The fate of the war in North Africa is in your hands with The LIONS of EL ALAMEIN!
