The “Y” Skylight

On the map, indispensable in this labyrinth, the city is shaped like a star with twisted and elongated vertices; only the vertices are built on; the spaces in between are a kind of ravine, into which small alleys descend black like ovens…
Siena's topography is so bizarre and irregular that behind the palace lies the countryside, fields and gardens that descend into a ravine between two hills overlooked by other parts of the city.

Suddenly, high in the sky, the enormous mass of the cathedral, before you the retaining walls of houses soar up to 20 meters, compact, red, with a very fine brick tone.
