Shizuka Lounge
This project involves the renovation of the first-floor lounge in a building owned by a foundation that originated as a forestry company. The design reflects both the Showa-era history of the building and the foundation’s story.
The lounge space is thoughtfully arranged with elements that create small, meaningful narratives, where the main elements of the interior represent the character of the building—a storage door made from facade tiles, a glass-block window that reveals the character of the entire building, textured walls that extend the feeling of the outdoors into the interior, and a wooden sofa that references the foundation’s past activities.
Each design operation is extremely subtle. For example, the door to the storage space behind the newly erected wall has been proportioned and positioned so that it acts more like a artwork than a door. The sofa is made of thin, curved wooden boards that are layered to create a small landscape. This piece not only highlights the foundation’s history but also invites interaction—as people sit on it, the sofa softens and subtly changes shape, creating a playful, pudding-like effect. This softness contrasts with the more rigid surrounding materials.
Although the space is small, the architect played with textures and new elements to create a dynamic environment. Designed as a lounge for people working in the building, it also functions as a gallery for exhibitions focused on Japanese painting.
The new lounge encourages visitors to engage with the space, fostering a comfortable, flexible environment that connects the foundation’s past, present, and future.
