Our revision to the home cleared the unit to its skeleton and is limited to the addition of super-furniture to create rooms. A washroom and bath sit inside large eccentric boxes, and appliances sit in their own containers, or in the case of the fridge stand next to a simple wall fragment. Finally, harkening back to the original plan, sliding doors open and subdivide the space so the unit can work as a single open room or be closed into bedrooms as needed. Storage is moved to a single wall along the length of the home, accessed through a continuous curtain.

When it appears in media Japanese architecture is almost always presented at its most spectacular. Exceptional construction or high-end concepts are central to the narrative in almost every case. The reality of cities like Tokyo is more faithfully reflected in anime or movies that aim for a realistic setting, whether it is to revel in stories of everyday life or surreal fantasy. The house in Kiyose would fit into such a story very well. It sits in a typical suburban neighbourhood outside of Tokyo’s expansive core, far enough away that some of the extremes of the mega-city are less present. Land prices are lower, tall buildings are rare, and there is less variety in the kinds of activities going on. Even so, the neighborhood is relatively dense, and the street is as much for walking as for cars.

~tropical escape~
~pattaya .. thailand~

For the landscape design of this Pattaya villa, we brought in a cascading water feature and positioned it next to the master bedroom, catching immediate attention the moment one step into the front garden. Linked by a terrace and a water lily pond, the pool is characterized as a zen object, endowed with an inserted platform where the owner or guest can practice a relaxing water Yoga session. In pursuit of a vernacular, functional and economical design, we decided to source from local suppliers for Thai foliage and water-loving plants, and building materials such as weatherproofing natural stones from the local quarry.

A small site, intended for dense inhabitation.

Located next to a university the apartment building is designed as a stack of studio apartments for students. With this in mind eight units are joined together around a brightly colored exterior stairwell with oversized landings and balconies. The stair is a shared space and a willful extension of the small units, intended to be appropriated in part for the residents' daily lives.

Each unit is unique, including half-submerged units on the bottom and mezzanine units on the top floors that extend livable space upwards as far as possible.

A to re-imagine the use of a post-war farmhouse, two hours north of . We were asked to update the home to accommodate a septuagenarian couple, their daughter, son-in-law, and three children. The was originally built quickly and efficiently with traditional, and sometimes ad-hoc techniques. Like many homes in of that time it was never properly insulated and showed its age after decades of use, scores of storms, and earthquakes.

The original house plan was more open and flexible, with sliding doors and perimeter hallways connecting rooms together. However the house became closed and awkward as the country westernized and daily life followed a new cultural path. We reset the design by stripping the interior to its timber frame and rebuilding within it. The new plan is created by placement of boxes within the exposed forest of columns, forming a bath, washroom, bedrooms, and a new stair to the children’s room above. An opening between floors connects the levels and brings light to the interior. Old is privileged over the new. A large kitchen counter is shaped by the way it accepts columns or dodges around them. Tatami floors in bedrooms similarly sidestep columns, while pieces of the house are simply left as they were, or re-used as screens or dividers.

The refreshed home is ready for decades more use. In Japan, where homes are normally destined for a life of twenty or thirty years, that is a radical outcome.

Collaboration with Lokallab

Words From Lokallab:
ISSUE
Del Carmen houses the largest contiguous in the ; however, the and livelihood are overlooked, and there is a lack of educational spaces for mangroves.

SOLUTION
The Delta aims to build disaster resilient and multi-functional spaces in the community and educate about the importance of mangroves.

Lokallab & EEMY are currently designing this to become a cultural, educational and informational center on the Mangroves.
We hope to strongly embed our culture into the design, and we plan to create the structure entirely out of materials sourced from the island.

With the municipality of Del Carmen and Kids for Kids, we hope to champion mangroves and foster a space where education and regeneration can thrive.
With our center, we hope to boost livelihood and connect people to the culture of mangroves in order to protect it for generations to come.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Help us expand our of individuals and involved in the preservation of mangroves.
