Tamba Farm grows herbs in the house along with the crops on the ground.

Bītorūto ビートルート(beetroot)

Belonging to the same family as chard and spinach, both the leaves and root can be eaten - the leaves have a bitter taste whereas the round root is sweet. Typically a rich purple color, beetroot can also be white or golden. Due to its high sugar content, beetroot is delicious eaten raw but is more typically cooked or pickled.

These beetroots are located at the Tamba Farm and grown in a local greenhouse in Kyoto, Japan 🗾

Most flowering Japanese cherry trees do not produce edible fruits. Instead, the edible cherry fruit was introduced to Japan from the West at the beginning of the Meiji Period (1868-1912). The satonishiki cherry was cultivated in Japan in the early 1900s and named after its cultivator Sato Esuke. Satonishiki are bright red and remain the most popular Japanese cherry today.

Cherries are in season during mid-summer. The majority of domestic cherries are produced in Yamagata Prefecture, where the satonishiki cherry was cultivated and the fruit is celebrated as a local symbol. Darker colored "American Cherries" are also widely available in Japanese supermarkets.

Just to add a little to the classic tomato 🍅
Large tomatoes are lined up in stores all year round. The flavor changes depending on the season, but it is always a delicious classic taste.

Slicing and eating is enough, but we recommend sprinkling a little kelp plum salt to enhance the flavor. The faint acidity of plum salt and the umami of kelp bring out the original taste of tomatoes. It may be a seasoning that is not always available, but you can find it at grocery store 🙌🏼

Bumble bees are important pollinators of wild flowering plants and agricultural crops. Due to their larger bodies, they can carry a larger load of pollen than honeybees.

Worldwide, honeybees pollinate just 3% of wildflowers, while other bees, including bumblebees, are responsible for the remaining 97%. Fewer bumblebees means fewer plants are pollinated, and thus begins a systematic breakdown of the ecosystem in which those plants exist.

If you see a bee close to you, please do not swat at or bother it. It will not attack you because it is more scared of you than you are of it. We need our friendly pollinators 🐝 please do your part to save the bees!

Kiwi in Japan differs very little from the kiwi sold elsewhere in the world. The fruit is made up of an exterior thin, hairy, brown skin with a juicy, green, tart flesh inside.

Kiwi is usually eaten raw with the skin removed. Domestic kiwi is in season during the late winter and early spring, but imported kiwi is available all year round.

Although the kiwi fruit originated in China, it was never widely cultivated there, and it was not until the 20th century that the fruit was brought to New Zealand and grown there in large numbers.

In the 1960s, the kiwi was introduced to Japan and they have since become quite popular. Although a fair number of kiwi are now grown domestically, the majority of the fruits are imported from New Zealand.

Ichigo (Strawberry) 🍓
Strawberries in Japan are not fundamentally different from those in the West, however, Japanese strawberries are known for their large, sweet, attractive taste. Strawberries are in season during late winter and early spring.

Strawberries were introduced to Japan from the West in the mid-1800s, but cultivation did not begin until around 1900. Nowadays strawberries are grown throughout the country. Fruit picking has become a popular activity at many farms in Japan during the springtime.

Native to China, the Loquat (ビワ) was carefully cultivated in Japan for a thousand years or more, and beloved in the American South. The Loquat is an evergreen tree that can grow to 25 feet.

Also known as Japanese plum or Japanese medlar, loquat produces large, dark green leaves that are often used in floral arrangements. The flavor is a pleasant blend of apricot, plum, and cherry with floral overtones, and is quite sweet when ripe.

The yellow, orange or white flesh of the fruit can be sweet or slightly acidic. Their sweet-tart flavor has been described variously as being similar to the plum, lemon, apricot, cherry, grape, or some combination thereof.

Jagaimo (potato)
Jagaimo was not part of traditional Japanese cuisine until relatively recently. They are believed to have been brought by Dutch traders from Indonesia to Kyushu in the 17th century.

However, potato cultivation in Japan did not begin until the end of the 19th century. Today, jagaimo is closely associated with Hokkaido where they are a regional specialty and common crop. Jagaimo is popular in several Japanese dishes and adapted Western dishes.
