A home with a teahouse in the city center.
The challenge was creating a calm living environment along a busy street that ensures privacy from the surrounding high-rises.
Each part is designed to be complex, but the overall structure is clear.

市街地にある茶室を併設した住まい。
交通量の多い前面道路への配慮や、周辺の背の高い建物からのプライバシーを確保しながら、いかにして落ち着いた居住環境をつくりだすかが課題となった。
部分としては複雑ながらも、全体としては明快な構成になるよう設計した。

喫茶　穀雨 / Tearoom Koku-u (renovation)



"今ここで生きる、私たちの想う”いい”を実践・表現する場所をつくりたい"

住まいの空間づくりに関わってきた私たちが、築35年の民家をフルリノベーション。私たちのオフィスと併設する形で、月に一度だけ開店する小さな喫茶として扉を開けました。

「喫茶 穀雨」と名付けられたその場所は、これまで世界各地で収集してきた小物や器、家具から古物はもちろん、季節や空間に馴染む音景の選定まで、私たちの美意識で満たされています。

移り行く季節のグラデーション
ゆたかに芽吹く樹々や草花
刻々とうつろう光と陰

幾星霜繰り返されてきたであろう、儚くも美しい森羅万象の一片を、茶や菓子を通じて共有したい。それは、時の移ろいを味わうようなもの、ともいえるかもしれません。

空間や庭は常に手が加えられており、現在進行形で改変され続けています。つくることのすぐそばにいたい、と自らの手を動かしながら木・金属・石・ガラス・焼物・植栽などの職人や作家との協働は今も続いています。
　
　
We wanted to create a place that does and portrays what feels good to us, living in the here and now.

As creators of residential spaces, we spent one year fully renovating a 35-year old private home with the idea of working the way we live. As of April 2023, this is our office. At the same time, it is a little tearoom, open just once a month.

The place named Tearoom Koku-u, a word used to describe how rain moistens grains in the field, is filled with our taste of aesthetics in accessories, tableware, furniture and antiques collected from all over the world, and of course our selection of soundscapes that reflect the seasonal ambience.

The gradation as the seasons change,
the rich new growth of trees and flowers,
the altering light and shade from moment to moment…
Through tea and sweets, we want to share the fleeting yet beautiful power of nature surely repeated over and over again, as if to savor the passage of time.

The space and garden are continually being modified so that we can always be in touch with the process of creation, using our own hands too, to work with wood, metal, stone, glass, pottery and plants in collaboration with other craftsmen and artists in an ongoing manner.

The living room is positioned at the best possible spot within the spacious lot. The large glass doors can be opened wide to allow for the interior and exterior to be enjoyed as a pleasant unified space. The dog can run across the large wooden deck and the grass lawn. A window placed high at the north side of the living room can be opened and closed using a controller, and it lets refreshing breezes from the yard flow in.

大きく開け放てる開口部によって、内外を一体的に利用できる気持ち良い空間。リビングの北側には遠隔操作できるハイサイドライトによって気持ちの良い風が通り抜ける。

Discover the joys of watching the progression of the seasons,the shifting of the light over the course of the day,the growth of vegetation.

Public to private, inside to outside, room to room —
rather than abruptly switching from one to the next,
or considering one adjacent to the other,seeking ways of connecting one to the other gently, gradually,valuing spaces that exist in between things, sequences.

Constructed of wood and earth,
the interior is gentle on body and soul alike,
a space conducive to a calm presence of mind.

A house built with the thought of providing a dwelling space
in which an aging couple might spend their final years in peace.

季節の移ろいや一日の光の変化、植物の成長に喜びを見出す。

公と私、内と外、部屋と部屋。
それらを突然に切り替え隣合わせにするのではなく、
ゆるやかに少しずつ繋げていくこと。
物と物との間にある空間や、シークエンスを大切にする。

The inner courtyard placed at the center of the building connects the adjourning rooms while going through constant changes of appearance, time, and light. With the seasons’ changes, breezes that come through, and the sound of running water, it brings enrichment to the everyday.

中庭は、見え方や時間、光を変化させながら隣接する各室を繋いでいく。また季節の移ろいや、風の通り、水の音により生活に潤いを与えてくれる大切な存在です。

The life of a building surpasses the human lifespan.
Build a new structure and it will outlast you yourself.
And thus, links into the future are formed, just the way it has been in the past.

The hope that came to mind was to offer a building that would stand with an air that could offer a continuing source of reliance and peace of mind to those who called it home, even with the flow of years.

To enter into a space designed for host and guest alone has a heightening effect on the senses, making one aware of the slightest interplays of light and sound. It even feels like a representation of the world’s changes in condensed form. One can even concur: great masters of the tea ceremony of old could find the whole universe within this minimal space.

The materials used for its construction consist of locally-sourced earth, timber, bamboo and stone. Someday when it has finished serving its purpose, the structure will return to the earth.

建物に用いられた材料は、地元の土や木や竹、石である。
いつかその役目を終えたとき、建物は地に還るだろう。

In its combining of time-weathered materials with new, left just as they are without particular treatment, the property seems to have attained a certain depth of character.

時を経た素材と、新しい素材。
取り繕うことなく、あるがままに共存させることで、なんとも味わい深い空間になったように思う。

The architecture embraces the flowing inner garden.
The trickle of water, quietly echoing through the family’s very own private garden.It’s a sensation of being out in the fields and mountains.

By closely linking the inner garden that expresses nature and the human home,
the idea was to offer a lifestyle that enjoys every aspect of the changing seasons.

自然を表現した中庭と、人の住まいとを密接な関係とすることで季節の移ろいを愉しめる暮らしを実現したいと考えた。
