Bonjour!
Maison et Objet 終了後、私たちはフランス東部のスイスにも近いジュラ地区へ。ここでは2年前のメゾン出展の際に縁ができたDelabranche furniture の若手家具職人Felix氏にコンタクトを取りました。
彼は日本での建築プロジェクト参加の経験があり、わざわざ仙台にも来て弊社にて銅の製作体験もしており、彼はフランスにおける協力者でもあります。
工房では日本製のカンナがあり、部屋の一部をフランスと日本風のハイブリットにするほどの日本好き。
興味深い話として、近年パリでは部屋の改装などで日本のヒノキ等が使われることが増えてきたが、フランスにはヒノキの特性を知る職人がいないため壊してしまうこともあるらしく、自分のところに修理や施工の依頼が来るとか。
「素材」に着目した商材を展開する上て、現地での職人との連携の重要性を示唆するエピソードだと思いました。
ということで、我々の今回のフランスにおけるミッションはすべて完了しました。
これよりジュラから山一つ越えたスイスのジュネーブ空港に向い、帰国の途につきます。

After Maison et Objet, we headed to the Jura region in eastern France, close to Switzerland. We contacted Felix, a young furniture craftsman of Delabranche furniture, whom we met two years ago when we exhibited at Maison.
He has experience working on architectural projects in Japan and came to Sendai to experience copper production at our company. He's also a collaborator in France.
His workshop is equipped with Japanese-made planes, and he love Japanese products and philosophy so that he even remodeled parts of rooms in a combination of Japanese and French style.
Interestingly, in recent years, Japanese cypress and other materials have been increasingly used for room renovations in Paris. However, in France, there are apparently no craftsmen who understand the properties of cypress, so the wood is sometimes destroyed, leading to requests for repairs and installation.
This episode suggests the importance of collaborating with local craftsmen when developing products that focus on materials.
Our mission in France was complete.
We headed to Geneva Airport in Switzerland, just over the mountain from the Jura, for our flight home.
