"Recognized as one of Japan's finest architects, Fumihiko Maki reached a greater audience in the 1990s with the completion of his first major projects in the United States and Europe - the Center for the Arts Yerba Buena Gardens in San Francisco, and the Isar Buropark in Munich. This study focuses on 25 of the architect's buildings, tracing the evolution of his ideas and architectural vocabulary. Arranged thematically, a range of work is featured, from a small house in Poland to the massive construction of the Makuhari Messe complex on Tokyo Bay. The text includes essays by Botond Bognar, Paolo Polledri, Kenichi Echigoshima and Alex Krieger as well as excerpts from "Investigations in Collective Form", written by Maki in 1964 and the basis for much of his subsequent practice."

"Group Form is a concept in which multiple buildings with common factors are linked together to form a frame that creates an entire environment. It emphasizes the individual buildings and the relationships that connect them. This exhibition will turn its attention to this point, shining a light on Maki’s particular aims in using Group Form to design a campus destined to house a university community."

Held at The Keio University Art Space. The previous exhibition at The Keio University Art Center focused on Maki’s architectural creations

World Trade Center, à New York.

"Kenzō Tange was one of the initiators, and with Kiyonori Kikutake, Kisho Kurokawa, and Fumihiko Maki he developed the Metabolism manifesto, presented at Tokyo World Design Conference in 1960. Many other thinkers and designers—some of them students at the time, including theorists coming from other disciplines—contributed to the development of the Metabolists’ ideas in the subsequent years, which reached an international audience and spread a radical vision of how architecture could be."

The most influential architectural movement from Japan that sought to demonstrate an idealism that bestowed the status of “avant-garde.”

"This features a wide range of buildings, some exhibiting the ultimate ideal of the white Zen cube, while others exemplify the search for the new wow factor in iconic design. In many, cutting-edge modernity is counterbalanced by a concern for sustainability—an issue that has motivated many architects to rethink and reintroduce concepts drawn from traditional Japanese architecture. Projects big and small, private and public, residential and commercial are included. "

Featuring dozens of high-quality photographs, schematic designs and insightful commentary this Japanese architecture book is a must-have for architects or collectors. The past five years are widely considered to have been the most innovative period in contemporary Japanese design history. The pro...

"Thirty years after the original Japanese edition by Fumihiko Maki and a team from Maki and Associates, an English-language version of this book is finally available. The original was based on a commissioned study on The Desirable Living Environment and examined Japanese urban spaces in the context of Tokyos rapid change and the citys distinctive aesthetic consciousness. In particular, the concern for surface layers, micro-topographies, and small spaces in the metropolis received special focus. With the ever-growing and new global metropolises emerging today, fundamentally different attitudes toward public domains are revealed. It is clear that old ideas no longer apply."

"Fumihiko Makis many buildings are characterized by a commitment to the ongoing project of Modernism as well as a humanist concern for the experience of the people who inhabit them . Both a thoughtful writer and a prolific builder. Maki was a founding member of the Metabolists. a highly influential group of Japanese architects in the 1960s who redefined how designers thought about large-scale urban planning. His own work. while sometimes vast in scale . is consistently responsive to the individual user. His 50-year exploration and expansion of the Modernist vocabulary has resulted in buildings that are technologically inventive. deceptively simple. and which carefully balance lightness and dignity. This book contains over 40 projects. extensively illustrated with drawings. photos. models."

Did you know the Museum’s architect, Fumihiko Maki, used light as his inspiration? His design ensures natural light is always present in the building. On sunny days, patterns filter through our courtyard's glass, transforming our granite walls. The beautiful patterns change with the time of day, much like a sundial.
