Mini Plant Lesson – Monstera Flowers & Fruit
After sharing the photos of my Monsteras blooming, a few people were curious about what exactly we are seeing.
Monsteras can actually produce flowers and fruit, although many people never notice them.
The flower has two main parts:
🌱 The outer curved part is called a spathe — it’s like a protective sheath that opens up.
🌽 The rough structure inside that looks like a maize cob is called the spadix. This is where the tiny flowers grow, and later it can develop into the fruit.
When the fruit matures, it can become Monstera deliciosa fruit, which is edible when fully ripe and is said to taste like a mix of pineapple, banana, and mango.
⚠️ Important: It should only be eaten when fully ripe, because unripe fruit can irritate the mouth.
One thing that surprised me is that once I started paying attention, I noticed several of the giant Monsteras in the nursery are blooming. It made me realize how much we can miss when we don’t observe our plants closely.
Plants really keep teaching us something new every day
