4 things to physically check before buying any pump in Kenya. The fourth one...nobody talks about it. 👇
Last month a farmer from Nakuru came to us after buying a pump from a roadside shop in town. New box. Good price. Clean branding.
Three months later? Burnt out. The shop told him it was his wiring. His electrician told him it was the pump. Nobody took responsibility. That motor cost him KES 32,000. Plus labour. Plus downtime during planting.
Here's the thing ... he could have known before he ever handed over the money. So before you buy any self-priming pump anywhere in Kenya, do these 4 checks.
Takes less than 5 minutes.
✅ CHECK 1 — Open the spec sheet and look at the winding material.
Ask: is it pure copper or aluminium? A real pump ... like the Versil we supply, uses pure copper motor windings.
Copper handles heat better. It runs more efficiently. It lasts longer under the load of daily pumping.
Cheap pumps use aluminium wire coated to look like copper. It costs the manufacturer less. It costs you a motor every 8–12 months.
If the seller can't tell you the winding material, or if the spec sheet just says "copper-coated" ... walk away.
✅ CHECK 2 — Ask about the impeller material. The impeller is the spinning part inside the pump casing. It's the component doing the actual work of moving water.
Cheap pumps use plastic impellers. They wear down fast... especially in areas with any sediment or pressure variation.
The pump we carry uses a forged brass impeller. Forged, not cast, not plastic. You can feel the difference in weight when you hold one.
A plastic impeller sounds hollow when you tap it. Brass doesn't.
✅ CHECK 3 — Check the voltage range against YOUR actual supply.
Most people skip this entirely. Kenya's electricity supply fluctuates , especially outside Nairobi.
If your area sees voltage drops below 200V regularly, a pump rated for only 220V–240V will labour, overheat, and fail fast.

Before buying any pump, check the rated voltage range on the specification plate. If it's narrow...ask yourself what happens on the days your voltage dips.
✅ CHECK 4 — And here's the one nobody mentions. Ask about the mechanical seal material.
The mechanical seal sits between the motor and the water. It stops water entering the motor.
When it fails, water kills the windings. Motor dies. No warning.
Most cheap pumps use low-grade rubber seals that degrade within months in warm or chemically variable water.
The pump we carry uses a Carbon/Ceramic mechanical seal. Carbon on the rotating face. Ceramic on the stationary face. This combination handles heat, friction, and minor water quality variations without breaking down. It is the industry standard for pumps meant to last.
If a seller looks at you blankly when you say "mechanical seal" , that tells you everything about what you're about to buy.
Most pumps look the same in a box. The aluminium body looks like the aluminium body. The fake copper looks like copper until you're dealing with the electrician six months later.
