Why the plums and pears production has been on decline.
There are several reasons behind this. Farmers nolonger improve their soil by applying the most important component of all - organic manure. If we go back during our grandparents time, the cow and sheep sheds used to be built within the Orchards and cows and sheep would rest and sleep under the pears and plums tree.
Secondly, farmers nolonger prune the fruits, fumigate to control disease like fire blight, no foliar application and we nolonger keep bees in our farms. Kitambo, every home used to have 2 or more bee hives, a flock of sheep that would give quality manure, our grandparents would spend alot of time cutting down (prunning) the trees when they are dormant (no leaves on them).
Thirdly, variety and seed sharing. I remember we would get a variety bought from rift valley, others from other regions and the same would happens with our friends who use to visit us, they would carry cuttings of the best variety they have seen and this contributed to those variety doing well in different region with different soil and they would take time to get affected by diseases.
Lastly, it's time we upgrade the trees that were planted by our grandparents more than 50+ years ago, amend and improve our soil, get new varieties from other regions and learn how to prune and feed the fruits. Plant a fruit tree today.
Here is a nyandarua plums I got from Limuru and we have pruned and fed it well. All the others that were planted by our fathers have zero fruits.
it's plum season in Nyandarua
