Quite a rare find even among prominent indoor plants. Caladium bicolor or Heart of Jesus grows well in bright indirect light with a lot of moisture. This variety in specific has green, red and white spots. If you plan to have one of them indoor, make sure to have a pebble tray filled with water to keep the humidity level up or simply mist it regularly.

Fittonia or Nerve Plant is a creeping plant, originating from the Peruvian jungle. One of the most famed variety is the Fittonia albivenis, whose bright green leaves are handsomely painted with silvery-white veins.

There are also other varieties with red and pink veins. It is not very common for these small leaf plants to product small white or yellow flowers indoor.

The plant enjoy being placed in bright, indirect light, with humid and warm atmosphere such as the bathroom as they can soak up on the rich moisture there. They also do well in terrariums.

If you parent one of these plants, never let the roots become too dry as the plant can wilt easily. At the same time, make sure you are not overwatering your fittonia which can lead to root and stem rot.

Max is reaching the “ranking phase” where he is beginning to learn his place within the hierarchy of our home. At this stage, he should see me (his owner) as the Alpha, something I'm still struggling to establish as a first-time dog owner.

He needs to know who is the leader of the den (our house) because otherwise training of any type will be difficult. I can safely say for now that i’m the alpha because he obeys my command; well at least most of the time. As a plant lover, one fact I got straight from the beginning is to discourage him from chewing off plant leaves - which in cases can mean life and death - I have plenty lying around the house.

As a general rule of thumb, you shouldn’t let your pooch chew on any plant like never ever, which can be tricky if you are not there all the time. So, here are a few common plants all dog owners should avoid if they let their dog roam freely. That includes sago palm, aloe vera, peace lily, philodendrons, tulip and even tomato plants, not to mention many more.

There is no perfect way to prevent unwanted accidents, but one of the first things you can do is to keep plants out of your dog’s reach, put up barriers or pick pet-friendly ones for your loving home if you decide to get some soon.

Houseplants are beneficial for you in many aspects. It improves your physical, and mental well-being, raises awareness on environmental issues and benefits young children's growth.

David Suzuki, a Canadian environmentalist frequently used the term “biophilia” to describe how humans feel the need to interact with other species, a need which is seldom met nowadays when children are often told to not do things in urban environments. Johann Hari, a Swiss-Scottish writer and journalist, who for decades dealt with depression, wrote in his book “the lost connections” by enlisting reconnecting with nature as one of the ways for people to live a more meaningful life.

Not to mention we have even more reasons to grow more plants. First of all, plants are known to improve both your physical and mental well-being. Being around plants or nature shows you that you are a part of the larger ecosystem and order; make you come to term with what you cannot control. A study conducted by the University of MIchigan shows that people who spend at least one hour in nature have a 20 per cent increase in attention span, memory and creativity.

Electronic devices are now largely available for children and adults alike. A New York Times report shows that young people aged between 8 to 18 years old spend as much as 7.5 hours everyday in front of the screen. Screen Time means time lost for other activities including interaction with nature. The term “Nature Deficit Disorder” has been frequently used by some to define a lack of regular interaction with nature which can cause stunted academic and development growth.

The evidence is clear that with an ever increasing availability of technology and demanding working culture, it is even more important for us to reconnect as frequently as possible with nature. That can simply translate to having a few houseplants in your home or office or take on a mini flower or vegetable garden in your yard.

Our apology for not being active recently as we are trying to dedicate time to welcome our new plant-loving member, a two and a half month old chihuahua puppy. His name is Max. At first when we introduced him to grass, he was frightened, but now he would dive head first into the closest grassy space he can find. When Max is by himself, he would play with and sleep on the grass; how cute is that?

Love is in the air. Some plants are just so hard to come by. For example, this green/ white pittonia and ficus elastica took us ages to find. Now, we are more than delighted to host them among our mini plant nursery.
