Born in 1962, Asasax studied at the School of Fine Arts in Phnom Penh, receiving a diploma in jewelry in 1985. He later turned to painting, leaning towards abstracted renditions of Cambodian themes. His use of color is notably brilliant. Many of his recent works are mixed-media relief sculptures or paintings incorporating layered silk. The artist’s own explanation of his present art is carefully considered: “My Angkor Color Reliefs are layered silk which show the many facets of the fabric of Cambodia, producing a sparkling surface of mixed colors which echo and recall the heritage of Angkor….[They] are meant to be windows or openings in the wall which dissolve the confines of the room and open the viewer to distant vistas of the past Khmer culture.” Asasax has exhibited widely, and has worked on commission, most notably for Hotel Sofitel Cambodiana, where he was Decorator from 1993 to 1998. His works are in the collection of King Norodom Sihanouk, as well as in those of many foreign diplomats, various of the fine area hotels, and Phnom Penh Airport. Since 1999 Asasax has had his own gallery, “Apsara”, located near the Museum of Fine Arts in Phnom Penh.
