RRRurban

At the World Smart City Expo 2025 in Busan, we had the privilege of meeting Mr. Washington Fajardo, architect, urbanist, and current Coordinator of the Cities Lab at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

With a strong background in public service in Rio de Janeiro, Mr. Fajardo is now leading transformative efforts across Latin America and the Caribbean—bringing smart solutions into the heart of urban planning. His presentation showcased how cities in the region are digitizing urban assets, identifying patterns, and generating vital data for planners, policymakers, and communities alike.

His core message was clear:

“Smart cities are not a luxury—they are essential for a sustainable and inclusive future.”

It was Mr. Fajardo’s first visit to Korea, and he expressed deep interest in strengthening ties between Korean innovation and Latin American cities. At .kr , we’re fully committed to supporting this mission and building bridges between regions.

Last week, Rurban Group had the honor of meeting with Mr. Alberto Sánchez, Vice President of ESSAP—the national water and sanitation authority of Paraguay—at the Embassy of Paraguay in Seoul. This important meeting was made possible thanks to the kind invitation of H.E. Ambassador Miguel Ángel Romero.

We discussed the potential for smart infrastructure collaboration, the profiling of strategic projects, and direct funding pathways through our international network of partners. Paraguay is moving forward with a long term vision, and we are enthusiastic about the possibilities of contributing to sustainable and high-impact developments in water and sanitation.

At Rurban Group, we believe in the power of international partnerships to accelerate innovation and inclusive growth. We look forward to working with ESSAP and Paraguayan institutions to identify transformative opportunities that align with both national priorities and global sustainability goals.

We are happy to share that Rurban Group recently participated in the 5th International Congress of Human Security at Hotel Punta Leona in Garabito, Costa Rica. This year, we had the privilege of teaming up with Re&Com, a leading internet and telecommunications company from Costa Rica’s South Pacific region.

Our discussion centered on the vital role technology plays in making our cities safer. But beyond the cameras, sensors, and drones, we must focus on what truly prevents crime: addressing the root causes like inequality, poverty, and lack of opportunities.

Technology can be a powerful tool to propel communities forward by providing education and connectivity, creating an environment where criminal groups struggle to establish their foothold. By empowering our communities before crime has a chance to proliferate, we’re not just enhancing security; we’re fighting the real enemies—social inequities that give rise to crime.

It’s crucial to remember that the battle for safer cities starts long before any crime is committed. By investing in our communities and ensuring they have access to the resources they need, we can create a future where the opportunities for a better life outweigh the temptations of criminal activity.
