“한 시대는 인간을 어떻게 바라보았는가?”
영국의 미술사학자 Shearer West는 『Portraiture』에서 초상을 단순한 닮음의 재현이 아닌 시대의 변화와 사회적 관습, 예술적 관행과 당대의 기대 속에서 형성되는 정체성과 인간 존재의 의미를 드러내는 형식으로 설명한다.

《Portraits : Ourselves 우리들의 초상》은 이러한 동시대의 조건 속에서 인간은 어떤 모습으로 존재하는가를 질문한다. 초상은 인간을 바라보는 방식인 동시에, 각 작가의 시선과 감각, 조형 언어가 가장 밀도 있게 드러나는 장르이기도 하다. 이번 전시는 예술가의 페르소나, 균열되고 융합되는 자아, 극적으로 연출된 인물들, 디지털 감각과 관계의 회로도처럼 구축된 초상, 인간과 비인간의 경계를 넘나드는 혼종적 존재, 그리고 기억과 시간 속에 남겨진 흔적을 따라 펼쳐진다.

“How has each era viewed the human being?”
In Portraiture, the British art historian Shearer West describes portraiture not as a mere representation of likeness, but as a form through which ideas of identity and human existence, shaped by cultural shifts, social conventions, artistic practices, and the expectations of their time, are revealed.

Within this contemporary condition, Portraits: Ourselves asks how the human being exists today. At the same time, portraiture expands into a site where each artist’s gaze, sensibility, and visual language emerge with particular intensity. This exhibition unfolds through artistic personas, fractured and fused selves, theatrically staged figures, portraits constructed like diagrams of digital sensibilities and human relationships, hybrid beings crossing the boundaries between the human and the nonhuman, and traces left behind by memory and time.

김소희(b.1998)는 해체되는 얼굴과 겹쳐지는 붓질 속에서, 인물의 심리와 신체 감각이 뒤섞인 유동적인 초상을 드러낸다. 빠르게 스쳐 지나가는 듯한 필선과 직관적으로 얽히고 밀려드는 색의 흐름은 인물의 형태를 명확히 고정하기보다 순간적인 정서와 존재의 흔적을 붙든다. 동양적 필력과 유럽 표현주의 회화 감각이 교차하는 그의 초상은 드로잉과 회화의 경계를 유영하며, 감정이 스쳐 지나가는 하나의 회화적 장면처럼 펼쳐진다. 인물들은 해체와 응집 사이를 오가며, 다면적인 내면의 층위가 화면 안에서 살아 움직이는 듯한 감각으로 다가온다.

Sohee Kim’s(b.1998) fragmented faces and overlapping brushstrokes coalesce into mutable portraits in which psychic tension and bodily sensation continuously intermingle. Swift, fleeting brushstrokes and surging flows of color intertwine intuitively, resisting any attempt to fix the figure into a stable form while holding onto fleeting emotions and traces of existence. Her portraits, where Eastern calligraphic brushwork intersects with an expressionistic painterly sensibility, drift between drawing and painting like scenes through which emotion briefly passes. Figures drift between dissolution and cohesion, approaching the viewer with the sense that multiple inner layers remain alive within the surface of the canvas.

디르크 조에테(b.1969)는 인간과 동물, 인형과 기계의 형상이 뒤섞인 기묘한 존재들을 통해 인간 사회의 연극성과 가면성을 드러낸다. 그는 드로잉을 기반으로 회화와 조각, 설치, 퍼포먼스를 넘나들며, 목각 인형과 민속 조각을 연상시키는 인물들을 구축해 나간다. 단순화된 얼굴과 가면 같은 형상, 구조적으로 배치된 장면들은 바우하우스의 조형 언어와 러시아 구성주의를 연상시키며, 인간이 사회적 역할속에서 끊임없이 구성되고 연기되는 존재임을 암시한다. 그의 초상은 어딘가 우스꽝스럽고 낯설지만, 동시에 인간 존재의 멜랑콜리와 불안, 연약한 인간성의 단면을 품고 있다.

Dirk Zoete(b.1969) reveals the theatricality and masked nature of human society through strange beings in which humans, animals, puppets, and machines become intertwined. Working across drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, and performance, he develops figures reminiscent of wooden puppets and folk carvings. The simplified faces, mask-like figures, and structurally composed scenes evoke the geometric aesthetics of the Bauhaus and Russian Constructivism, revealing how human identity is continually constructed and performed through social roles. His portraits appear absurd and unfamiliar, yet at the same time carry melancholy, anxiety, and the fragile conditions of humanity.

김찬송(b.1988)은 피부와 손, 시선 같은 신체의 단편을 밀도 높은 화면 안에 끌어들이며, 신체의 감각을 경유한 내밀한 초상을 그려낸다. 스트록이 강한 붓질과 과장된 클로즈업, 화면 밖으로 밀려난 듯한 구도는 피부와 신체를 하나의 낯선 표면처럼 밀어 올리며, 육체의 밀도와 압박감을 끌어들인다. 번지는 듯한 피부 표현과 거친 회화적 에너지는 욕망과 불안, 친밀함과 거리감이 뒤섞인 감각을 불러내면서도, 그 아래 잠겨 있는 깊고 온유한 감정의 결을 함께 남긴다. 더 예민하게 자신을 응시한 작가의 자화상들은 익숙했던 몸과 시선이 낯설게 감각되는 순간을 붙든다.

Chansong Kim(b.1988) draws visceral portraits mediated through bodily sensation, pulling fragments of skin, hands, and gazes into densely charged pictorial spaces. Aggressive brushstrokes, exaggerated close-ups, and compositions that seem pushed beyond the frame transform the body into an unfamiliar surface, intensifying the density and pressure of flesh. Diffused skin tones and rough painterly energy evoke sensations in which yearning and anxiety, intimacy and distance become intertwined, while beneath them remains a quiet and deeply tender emotional texture. The artist’s self-portraits, rendered through an especially heightened gaze toward herself, capture moments in which the familiar body and gaze begin to feel strangely unfamiliar.

듀 킴(b.1985)은 퀴어적 존재감, 종교적 도상과 상상력, 디지털 시대의 감각을 뒤섞으며 고정된 정체성과 보편적 가치 구조를 흔든다. 아름다움과 기괴함, 숭고함과 유머가 교차하는 그의 형상들은 인간과 성상, 욕망과 신념, 현실과 환상이 뒤엉킨 상태로 나타나며, 단일한 존재로 환원될 수 없는 동시대 자아의 감각을 정교하게 드러낸다. 이번 딥티크 작업 〈Pierced Grace 01 & 02〉(2026)는 목재 구조를 기반으로 알루미늄 캐스팅, 금속, 라텍스, 렌티큘러 등의 이질적 물성이 교차하는 형태로 펼쳐진다. 서로 다른 두 개의 구조 안에서 반향하는 화면은 마조히스트적 신체와 균열된 성전의 이미지를 각기 다른 방식으로 변주하며, 작가 신체의 일부와 성적 욕망, 종교적 억압의 감각을 추상화된 자전적 초상으로 풀어낸다.

Dew Kim(b.1985) destabilizes fixed identities and normative systems of value by intertwining q***r presence, religious iconography, imagination, and the sensibility of the digital age. His figures, where beauty and grotesqueness, sublimity and humor intersect, appear as entangled states of humanity and sacred imagery, desire and belief, reality and fantasy, revealing contemporary forms of selfhood that resist reduction into a singular identity. The diptych Pierced Grace 01 & 02(2026) unfolds through intersecting materials constructed upon wooden frameworks, where aluminum castings, metal and lenticular surfaces collide and intermingle. Resonating across two distinct structures, the works transform images of the masochistic body and fractured sanctuaries in different ways, fusing fragments of the artist’s own body, sexual desire, and the sensation of religious oppression into abstracted autobiographical portraits.
