How to understand any kind of art?

1. Let in the first impression.
Listen to an art piece like you listen to music. Due to an educational system and overall rules of human communication system, we trained to search for meaning in visuals. Leave meaning for a moment, just be impressed.

2. Look for things that actually coughed you attention in an art piece. If you see a story or symbols or colors that resonate with you. Think why they do. Most of artists want their work to be a dialogue with a viewer rather than their own statement only.

3. Now it’s time to try to understand author’s point of view. To start listening part of a visual dialogue. To do so, you can begin with researching author’ biography, location, historical events happened. It will give you very new perceptive of an art piece.

4. And the last one. Read art critics’ point of view or an artist’s himself/herself talking about the work. Usually that’s what everybody begins with, robbing themselves of opportunity to discover their own feelings and perspectives. That can be as meaningful as critics’ ones.

The cat is the most stable surrounding in my recent life.
I’m fighting hard with every possible skill an art school and years of practice hardwired in my right hand. To get to the point when I used to be able to say things by lines and color spots, right from my head without carrying a bunch of heavy concepts of how I suppose to say it. And the things I want to say right now, can be said not to a person, but to a person’s life point free of those concepts. Not there yet. But getting closer.
