🛣️ Common Road Defects Every Civil Engineer Should Know Road defects affect safety, ride quality, and pavement life. Knowing how to identify them helps in maintenance planning and failure prevention.
1️⃣ Cracking
Description: Breaks or fractures in the pavement surface.
Types: Alligator (Fatigue) Cracking: Interconnected cracks resembling alligator skin; caused by repeated traffic loads and weak base.
Longitudinal Cracking: Cracks parallel to the road centerline; often due to poor joint construction or shrinkage.
Transverse Cracking: Cracks perpendicular to the road; caused by temperature changes.
Block Cracking: Large rectangular cracks due to asphalt aging and shrinkage.
Main Causes: Heavy traffic, temperature variation, poor subgrade support.
2️⃣ Potholes
Description: Bowl-shaped holes in the pavement.
Causes: Water infiltration → weakens base → traffic removes loose material.
Risks:Vehicle damage, accidents, rapid pavement deterioration.
3️⃣ Rutting
Description: Longitudinal depressions in wheel paths.
Causes: Weak pavement layers, heavy axle loads, poor compaction.
Effect: Water accumulation → hydroplaning risk.
4️⃣ Bleeding (Flushing)
Description: Excess bitumen rises to the surface, creating a shiny, sticky surface.
Causes: Too much asphalt binder, high temperatures.
Effect:Slippery road surface, reduced skid resistance.
5️⃣ Corrugation (Washboarding)
Description: Series of ridges and valleys across the road.
Causes:Traffic braking/acceleration, unstable base.
Common Areas:Intersections, bus stops.
6️⃣ Depression & Settlement
Description: Localized low areas in pavement.
Causes:Weak subgrade, poor compaction, underground utility failure.
7️⃣ Edge Cracking
Description: Cracks along pavement edges.
Causes:Poor shoulder support, drainage problems.
8️⃣ Ravelling
Description: Loss of aggregate from pavement surface.
Causes:Poor binder quality, aging, weathering.
Effect:Rough surface, reduced pavement strength.
9️⃣ Shoving
Description: Pavement pushed sideways, forming waves.
Causes:Heavy braking, weak asphalt mix.

Description: Loss of bond between asphalt and aggregate due to water.
Result:Rapid pavement failure.
