We’re thrilled to share a glimpse from our recent site visit in Gampaha, where we’re preparing for the Factory Extension Project – a new wing dedicated to food processing.

This transformation is not just about expansion, but about reimagining and adapting the existing spaces to enhance their functionality and efficiency.
Stay tuned as we bring this vision to life — weaving together design, purpose, and progress.

CASA CA

The Design Proposal of the Proposed Personalized Residence @ Kegalle
Status – Constructions to Commence

The CASA CA is located Kegalle, away from the urban chaos. The house stands on 17 perch land designed from a basic form, defined with natural terrain emerge with direct views to the adjoining greenery. This modern house graces a treed hilltop with a large main volume of a living space overlooking a verdant mountain landscape. The house is formed in three main volumes in three different layers dividing eating, sleeping and living areas.

The main level of the house comprises living, dining, kitchen and Master Suite while the main living space has been lifted and rests on a podium level. The lower level accommodates Study area and two bedrooms with a common bathroom. The striking feature of the house is the hidden staircase to the rooftop level entering a prominent shrine space capturing most of the views of tree canopies and distant lush green mountains. The roof terrace consists of larger free space, laundry washing, drying and access to the overhead water tanks.

The wooden flooring, robust material surfaces for the flooring and special lighting layout at entry level brings out a celebrative home entity while the earthy and soothing colors of the exterior blending the surrounding creating a holistic and complete image of an aesthetically pleasing house hiding within greenery.

The Canvas

The Canvas was conceptualized as an eye pleasing, mind soothing, energetic interactive work space for Java. Our primary focus was to create a soothing, energetic and mindful environment for people who use the space daily; the staff and the clients/spectators. We started off with a white palette as the base color as we wanted a calming base environment, as opposed to a striking visual which will make it uneasy for the users and spectators to engage with daily work. We introduced hints of mild color to the canvas with meaning, purpose and also mindfulness. The space dividers are conceptualized to play a multi-functional role versatile backdrop for both virtual and physical meetings, photo shoots, videos etc. The use of these space dividers is limitless in a marketing point of view.

Aesthetically, all elements appear as many impressions of one unified space. Whether if it is furniture, lighting, floor impressions, we have tried rigid and sharp edges and interconnected ceilings, walls and floors as much as possible. For instance, the ceiling lights on the suspended ceiling framework are designed as sleek, elemental, organic curves which emits ample amount of light, adequate enough to brighten up the space while adding the needed elegance to a commercial space, frequently visited by students and clients.

Coffee-break Ceylon, in a blink of an eye, takes away the title of “Coolest Kid on the Block”!

This little café is located right in front of the Kalubowila Hospital – pedestrian crossing. It has no proper parking. The locality is not fancy. Sandwiched between an ATM and a local grocery store, the space is extremely small and seemingly inadequate for a public/commercial purpose. The neighborhood is busy and always crowded, filled with people who visit the hospital mostly. Many are visitors, many are patients. Many could also be doctors and many could even be student interns at the hospital. Pavement is usually occupied by friendly neighborhood dogs and the friendly people who has no shelter. The chances of anything or anyone to become oblivious and invisible amidst this local metropolitan buzz is way higher.

Interestingly, it is what it is. We believe that these are elements that shouldn’t be neglected or seen as disturbances at any point. They are the very elements that made us commit to the project. We knew that this is not Butter Boutique nor Rosmead Place. This is a local café which will serve the tired, the thirsty and the hungry. It needs to embrace the nuances of the locale. This new kid on the block has to stand out in its own way while becoming one of them.

We used our usual go-to material; the salvaged, recycled pallet wood. Although it is the usual for us, it is certainly new to the neighborhood which has no architectural identity whatsoever. The locality is filled with haphazard, here and there architecture.

For us, more than anything else, we got an excellent opportunity to explore our bandwidth as architects. We got an excellent opportunity to explore the bandwidth of our creativity. Our flexibility as designers and creative individuals. We started our journey with a high-end café; Butter Boutique located in Rosmead Place, a prime spot in Colombo. Now, here we are, right at the pavement of a local street, trying to crack the code of what will work for the state of minds of these people?

Have a look at the pictures and read the description to know what we did and what we think what we did!

P.s – The pictures do not do justice to the ambience of this little café!

The Tea House was conceptualized to be a cathartic space where one can enjoy the luxury of great cup of tea while experiencing the craft of Tea making. It serves the purpose of a Visitor Center, where Tea processing is carried out and exhibited in a smaller scale, offering the spectator an opportunity to experience the ‘behind the scenes’ of a great cup of Tea!

This is a simple linear building made out of salvaged timber and glass. The envelope comprises of modular fins with the ability to control ventilation and light levels needed for Tea Processing. The challenge is creating the modular fins as building blocks using salvaged timber. Although the 3D visualization looks modern and crisp, we are hoping to see a rustic rawness, once the salvaged, thrown out wood pieces are brought into life again and transformed into modular, breathable fins. That is one thing, we are certainly excited and looking forward to!

Also, there is a mechanical + manual hoist which we hope to build from scratch using salvaged scrap materials. We are excited about that too!

The Tea House is only one space of a holistic Wellness Resort offering an ardent experience of the life that revolves around the Tea Leaf. It rests peacefully amidst the lush greenery of the Tea bushes and a variety of giant trees in the village of Mathugama!

Keep watching this space to see how we build a Tea House with things that you usually throw away ~ 🤎

Butter Boutique, Rosmead Place; the space was smaller than Park Street Mews and the timeline was even tighter. The idea was to “Create” an exotic space, an exotic ambience with unique Architectural Elements while grappling with in-built spatial, time and budget constraints.

Though small in scale, this is surely 'The Project' where we explored the idea of “Craftsmanship” in Architecture. We tried working with models. We took risks. Some succeeded. Some failed. Some were not in our hands. It was a journey of ‘becoming’ for all of us.

The highlight of this project is nothing but the Mosaic Clay Tile Tables. The existing fiber table tops were replaced by Hand-Made Mosaic Clay Tile Table Tops, which was one of the challenging, intricate and complex Architectural Elements, ever executed by NOMAD. This Table Top is certainly a first time and is the start of a much broader and a creative Architectural Ceramics culture in Sri Lanka.

Is Architecture only an assembly of readily available materials and components in the market? For us, the answer is NO and we started with a Simple Table Top! ✊🖤
