Exotics and Orchids Co-operative Society Ltd.

Lakmalsala, the pioneer in commercial Orchid, Anthurium and ornamental plant growing, was formed for the development of commercial horticulture and was registered as a Co-operative Society on 7th November 1968 with 59 founder members being present at the inaugural meeting. The main thrust of the Society was on ornamental orchid growing which was initially developed with imported Orchid plants from

Thailand and Singapore in 1969.By that time there were over 150 members and many of them imported cut flower Orchid plants as well as small plants in community pots. Subsequently,
Orchid plants were imported by Lakmalsala on several occasions to growers. We conducted many seminars in Orchid growing for the benefit of growers. There existed at that time, an Anthurium growing society and that too was amalgamated with Lakmalsala in 1974.The Anthurium flowers harvested by them were supplied to Lakmalsala. Although at first most Orchid growers used planting materials imported from Thailand and Singapore, gradually with the commencement of hybridizing of Orchids locally by a few hybridizes, growers began to use these local hybrids successfully and today most of the growers use these local materials saving a large amount of foreign exchange. At present we supply flower arrangements with Orchids and Anthuriums to individuals, tourist hotels, Government departments and supply garlands and take away boxes of flowers to tourists. We also specialize in floral decorations for weddings, church and other functions. All our floral products are made with 100% fresh flowers.
