The site is 45 kilometers from Kurunegala in Kumbukgate, a populated neighborhood. The building was half built and unused. The client wanted to make it a unique restaurant and dining destination in the surrounding area. The design features a lower-ground-floor bar/ restaurant, a ground-floor family all-day dining area, and an upper floor BYOB restaurant. Approximately 80% of the existing structure and locally accessible materials were utilized for both the building and interior features.
The main faรงade uses exposed brick to create a simple and elegant frontage. Brick was the most readily available local material, as it is manufactured in the area. The brick pattern designed by the architect also promotes natural ventilation, especially for the upper-level restaurant.
Bamboo was the most extensively used material. Bamboo initially used for slab shuttering was later reused to make restaurant counter tables, adding a unique character to the space. Bamboo strips were also used as light fittings in the main restaurant, with more than 80% of the bamboo reused as interior elements after serving a structural purpose.
Water barrels used during construction were reused as bar counter cladding and light fixtures in the lower level bar, with dry wood added for decorative detailing. Attaeriya tree removed to clear the site was reused as bar counter shading elements, and waste timber pieces formed an iconic feature wall in the lower restaurant and its tables. Floors were finished with cement rendering, ensuring minimal environmental impact and harmony with nature.
