Hugëlkultur, (pronounced Hoo-gul-culture) means hill culture or hill mound. It is a farming/horticultural technique where a mound built from decaying wood debris and other compostable plant biomass, layered on top of each other.

They hold moisture, build and increase fertility with time, encourage a fungal dominant living soil system and maximise surface volume to grow a variety of plants.

It can be built from any type of biomass including logs, stems and branches, wood chips, grass clippings, leaf mold and even manure.

Once a hugëlkultur bed is well established, it will require less maintenance in terms of irrigation and nutrients. All the biomass layers will eventually fully decompose creating rich soil. All you have to do is plant, grow, harvest, consume, and repeat!

The ancient farmers in Sri Lanka utilized only organic and natural farming practices to enrich the soil. They used cattle manure, dried leaves and decayed hay to feed their lands, improved microbial activity and the overall fertility in the soil.

💚These traditional methods produced high yields and some of highest quality crops. With zero chemicals and harmful toxins, the rice grown back then was so much healthier than anything we can find in Sri Lanka today.
